Hello,
Would you buy a VAG vehicle, such as a Golf 4 or Seat Ibiza 6K with engine codes AVG, AHF, or ASV (which are VEP diesel engines with 110 hp), even with 200,000 km on the odometer, or is the risk of encountering too many problems too high?
I think getting spare parts shouldn't be a problem, and I'm also comfortable doing the repairs myself.
I hope this is the right forum for this; if not, please move it. I also tried to find something about this topic using the search function, but unfortunately, I wasn't sure which keywords to use. I hope you can still give me some advice.
Thank you. Markus

Hello Markus,
VP engines can easily last for over 400,000 kilometers, provided that the usual maintenance procedures have been followed.
Oil, timing belt, and water pump should be fairly obvious. Between 150,000 and 250,000 kilometers, the injectors should be replaced. The hydraulic lifters might need replacement again, possibly up to 400,000 km, but I wouldn't expect any other major defects in the engine with proper maintenance.
I see the surrounding circumstances more as a problem.
- Rust
- Shock absorber
- all rubber bushings in the suspension system.
- possibly ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.
Once points 2-4 have been addressed, reaching 400,000 kilometers should not be a problem. You have to pay close attention to rust when you buy something and continue to monitor it.
Overall, I don't see many reasons to be concerned about buying a used car with 200,000 km on the odometer, as long as the previous owner gives the impression that they treated the car with care (e.g., warming it up before accelerating, letting it cool down after prolonged high-speed driving, etc.).
Even a well-executed chip tuning wouldn't deter me. I personally drove a Golf 3 for 300,000 kilometers (the last 100,000 kilometers with a chip), and I'm currently selling it. I still think the car has another 100,000 km left in it, but I just wanted something bigger and newer, so I bought the current Passat.
Best regards,
Guste.

VEP-TDI engines are a very robust type! When changing the timing belt, it is recommended to replace the water pump with a model that has a metal impeller. I've had good experiences with my diesels; none of them had less than 150,000 km on the odometer when I bought them. I'm not too worried if the body condition is good, and the rest is acceptable based on the purchase price and the condition of the technical components. I usually drive these cars until they reach the end of their economic lifespan. Okay, bitte gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest. NA,Gehörlose wie ich können auch Schrauben! Definitely.
Regarding the engine, I would be the least concerned.
My V70 has 300,000 km on the odometer and has been chipped to produce 400 Nm of torque!
The chip, if it has any effect at all, affects the drive. The clutch was already due for replacement at 250,000 kilometers .
ZR & WAPU was told to change the oil - otherwise, the engine will definitely run for a loooong time.
A turbo failure can happen even on a brand new Golf with only 50,000 kilometers, or it might last for 500,000 kilometers.

If you live outside of a city center and don't need the green sticker in the near future, hopefully you'll find a good deal (hopefully, because unfortunately, there are people who have to scrap perfectly good cars for just €2500). I would also make sure the car isn't being sold by a fly-by-night dealer, that it hasn't already had too many owners, and that it's in generally good condition. Then you shouldn't go wrong, and you should end up with a reliable vehicle.

Hello,
I can only agree with my predecessors. The engine is absolutely reliable as long as the ZR (tire) replacement is observed (I would drive it for a maximum of 90,000 km and regularly measure the tire width).
You should expect to have to replace parts like the exhaust system, shock absorbers, wheel bearings, etc., starting around 200,000 km.
But all of that is also quite affordable.

Regarding the engine:
My car's auxiliary cooling fan is still working at 300,000 km with the original (high-quality) water pump and the second set of injectors. The Simmer rings and shaft seals are still the original ones and in good condition.
Starts up like it's brand new and performs as expected. Turbo, number one. Only the oil pan gasket is leaking.
The clutch is the second one. Unfortunately, I installed an EMS (Engine Management System) afterward. A fatal mistake, because the vehicle makes a humming noise up to approximately 2000 RPM.
