Good morning.

I'm having a transmission problem with my TDI ALH that has a 5-speed gearbox.
I'm experiencing vibrations in the gear lever when I'm in 3rd or 4th gear; specifically, the problem occurs when shifting between 3rd and 4th gear.
A few days ago, I got to work on my equipment and modified the housing. Specifically, I drilled out the bushing on the main shaft and replaced it with a brass bushing that I turned myself, ensuring there's no more play in the lever.
Then I adjusted the gear lever to have zero play by using millimeter-thick shims inserted lengthwise. I also disassembled everything, lubricated it, and reassembled it with new parts.
The mechanism is now functioning very precisely and feels like new, although the vibration has become even more pronounced. This is probably because the pulsating vibrations are no longer lost in the slack play but are instead directly transmitted to the shift lever.

I really can't figure out how this is happening. At first, I thought I might have stressed the engine and transmission during the conversion to EMS, so I repeatedly aligned the engine and transmission. (However, the problem was already present before.)
It's really driving me crazy, especially since I'm constantly driving at a low RPM (around 2000 rpm) in the fourth gear when I'm in the city, and it vibrates quite a bit in that range. It sounds really rough.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Best regards,

What do you think all those features of your old ZMS were good for? They were precisely designed to suppress things like this. When switching to EMS, you have to expect these kinds of problems. You only have three options:
- convert back to ZMS configuration.
- to come to terms with the fact that it is this way.
- Have a vibration damper custom-designed by a transmission specialist for a significant amount of money, ensuring it perfectly matches your specific setup.

Hi,
Yes, ZMS is important.
Hopefully, you still have the original (hollow) driveshaft in place on the right side.

Everything is as usual.

I don't understand the answer right now! I wrote that it was already there before, and it hasn't gotten worse or improved at all.
For your information, this engine was delivered with EMS in various models icon_wink.gif.

You must have only converted to an EMS when your dual-mass flywheel (DMF) was defective, right? So it would make sense that before the DMF failed, it vibrated like it does with an EMS installation. How do you know that these exact vibrations don't occur in models that come with an EMS from the factory?

No, when I inspected the engine, I cleaned the injectors and adjusted the valve clearances. The dual-mass flywheel (DMF) was still okay before. Also, the clutch hasn't worn out completely yet after 121,000 km.

I highly doubt that the Volkswagen Group would deliver a car where the gear stick vibrates 1 cm within its housing. That definitely didn't happen with Daimler!

Perhaps someone could contribute something constructive to this discussion? When I searched online, I found information suggesting that this phenomenon frequently occurred with the ALH engine, and that Volkswagen had a lot of trouble fixing it.
