Recently, our family acquired a second Audi A6 V6 TDI (AFB) quattro, manufactured in the year 2000.
I noticed that when turning or accelerating while steering, there's a distinct humming noise. It's not coming from the power steering, but from the rear axle. I strongly suspect it's related to the drivetrain at the rear (possibly the differential?).
Does anyone know if this noise is normal for a Quattro?
If not, what could be the reasons for that?
The rumbling sound is normal and actually comes from the all-wheel drive system, due to the large differences in rotational speed between the individual wheels.
Incidentally, it gets even worse with large wheels and a shallow offset; the problem is least noticeable with the (smaller) standard wheels.
Please read my post about vibrations between 1500 and 1600 RPM.
