Hello everyone, my problem is that I recently installed a chip. Now I want to reinstall the old ones. Since the tuner has already soldered everything onto the sockets, I want to replace them myself, but the chips have two different designations: one with 'L' and one with 'H'.

Has anyone ever done something like this before????? Or are there any schematics or layouts available??

Best regards, Marcus

Hello Marcus,
I would also like to have the schematics and layouts :)

You have 2.5 options:

1. Try it out
If you get the high and low reversed, the motor won't run
(the processor in the control unit is completely out of the picture).
In this case, nothing usually breaks.

2. Read out
If you have the option to read out the chips, do so and compare them with the originals (don't forget to send me a copy icon_twisted.gif). The result should be clear.

2.5.
You can tell me a bit more about your car / ECU / control unit.
Maybe someone here on the forum can then tell you what goes where.

Rudi

Thanks, I found a number in the engine compartment (D0Y). If you say that there won't be any damage, I can just try it (50/50). Unfortunately, I don't have a way to read the chips :(

Best regards,
Marcus

I hope I'm not making any silly mistakes!!!

Okay, open the control unit and lay it down so that the connector block faces to the left. Remove the upper circuit board and fold it to the right - that's where the EPROMs are. You should now be able to see them clearly, one is at the top and one is at the bottom. The lower one is the low and the upper one is the high. Make sure to insert the EPROMs correctly, otherwise the ignition light won't even come on when you try to start. You can't really break anything - I've accidentally inserted them the wrong way several times on my 1Z, or fed them with the wrong software.

Hello Rudi,

The description is okay for your control unit (MSA12), but unfortunately doesn't match the one from Marcus at all.

@Marcus:
The control unit in your car is probably an MSA15-7 (with the split connector).
If you have removed the cover, and the connector is pointing towards you, the EPROMs are on the top right.
The left one is the low byte, and the right one is the high byte.

Hey!

Please handle the PCB with care. You have 2x4x4=32 different possibilities to insert your original chips (including rotated placement), but only one where your engine will start again! If you forget the order of the chips, it will take longer for it to start.
In most cases, the tuning chip is labeled just like the original. So, "Hi" and "Lo" as well. You'll need a chip removal tool (I don't know the exact name, sorry) depending on the chip type. You can also do it without, with a lot of feeling. So, remove the tuning chip, then put the original chips back in the same way, assemble the Stg, and see if the glow lamp lights up. If not, you've done something wrong, or the chip is faulty.

Hi,
You must have been exaggerating a bit when you mentioned 32 possibilities icon_wink.gif
With the type of memory used, there are only 4 (okay, 8 if you consider the possibility of incorporating the parts overhead).
The chips have a beveled corner. This must be located in the upper left corner (with the connector facing downwards, the chip's upper right).

EPROM sockets:
Okay, they prevent customers from copying the chips if they know someone who has an EPROM burner. However, if you need to access the data, you can still do so.
In most cases, a simple intermediate adapter with swapped address lines is sufficient.

Oh, I completely forgot about that...
You're right, Kar. There are actually only two options for installing the chip (over-head installation hides the label)!

Okay, they prevent customers who know someone with an EPROM burner from simply copying the chips. However, if you need to access the data, you can still do so.

Okay, I understand. Please provide the German text you want me to translate. I will translate only the readable text, leaving the HTML tags, BBCode tags, and URLs as they are.
Here's the translation:

The hardware manufacturer claims that the sockets are individually coded with soundsoviel million versions. I haven't yet disassembled any sockets, but I believe there's something to it.

These sockets can accommodate both the original, un-coded chip and the coded tuning chip. Therefore, there must be some electronics inside, otherwise, a simply swapped address line would make the original chip unreadable.

Hello Uwe,

The problem with socket manufacturers is that the socket for the controller in the control unit must be 100% transparent, meaning the controller must be able to address every address as usual.

EPROM programmers typically read a chip starting at address 0 and ending at the highest address. The electronics in the socket (e.g., a programmable logic module or a small PIC microcontroller) recognize this 'linear' access and then swaps the address lines or disables the ChipSelect, etc., so that only garbage remains in the read data.

This 'linear' access can be bypassed by an adapter in the programmer, where the address lines are swapped.

Of course, this assumes that the coding socket is not soldered, but rather sits on this intermediate adapter.

Tens of thousands of coding options can be realized in such a way that at an address outside the address range of the original chip, a code is stored that ensures that the controller in the control unit finds the valid tuning data at the correct location.

If the code is incorrect, nothing works.

If the original chip is present, the socket electronics cannot find its code and will execute 'original' functionality.

Best regards,
Rudi
