You need to distinguish between the position of the gear selector and the actual gear that is engaged.
Do you also have the display in the instrument cluster that shows the selector lever position? Does it remain in first gear when you shift through the different selector lever positions?
It's possible that your position sensor is malfunctioning and sending a signal to the transmission control unit (TCU) indicating that first gear is selected. In this case, the TCU will prevent shifting to higher gears because it believes that you have locked out the higher gears (e.g., for driving uphill).
