The LED on the VCDS interface is a great idea for estimating the area where the problem lies in case of communication issues.
When connected to a Polo 9N, it always blinks towards the driver. However, with the Ibiza 6L (which has a horizontally oriented OBD socket behind the small compartment), it points downwards. And while the Polo 6R has the OBD socket mounted diagonally downwards again, it's in the opposite direction, meaning the LED blinks at the driver's foot.
In the Rapid, the LED is mounted lengthwise, meaning it blinks to the right or left (I don't remember exactly which way).
Whether or not the LED is visible is therefore likely a matter of chance, depending on the orientation of the OBD sockets in the specific vehicle model.

My suggestion:
Incorporate more blinking LEDs into the interface so that the data dialogue is recognizable from all directions. Alternatively, distribute the light from the dual LED using transparent plastic parts/light guides to achieve a similar all-around visibility.

Yes, it seems that the VCDS tools are selling well enough as they are.
But it would be a way to further increase acceptance of competing products. Skoda uses the advertising slogan "Simply clever" for such small things.

If you don't want to change anything else about the layout, then a completely transparent enclosure might already achieve the desired effect.

I suspect that 80% of users don't understand the meaning of LED at all, 18% are not interested, and 2% would be happy about it.

The idea is nice, but it's actually not necessary at all. You don't necessarily have to constantly monitor the LED. Either the diagnosis works, in which case no one will look at it, or it doesn't work, in which case you can also just glance briefly under the dashboard.

During a log transfer, you certainly don't need to do that, because if a log transfer even occurs, it seems that the connection has probably been established!

Then the connection was established successfully up to the beginning of the log. However, this doesn't guarantee that a connection will never be dropped – I've already experienced this with the Polo and the MED9.1 system, although it hasn't been reproducible so far.

Then, the LEDs will also indicate that the communication has stopped.
Advantage: You could immediately pull over to the right and restart.
Disadvantage: The device is still located near the left knee, which forces you to...
to avert one's gaze from the traffic.
Compromise suggestion: build an extension that allows you to position the interface so that THE LED is within your field of vision .

Or, we could make it even simpler, without even touching the hardware, and simply embed the "LED" in the software and display it somewhere on the screen.

Or simply add an extension to it, then you can design the interface however you want .

Such an extension would be something for the diagnostics shop .
