Post03-11-2017, 13:11    Subject: Golf 7 GTD manual transmission has a slight leak Quote

Hello,
The manual transmission in my Golf 7 GTD (34,000 km, manufactured in 2016) is leaking slightly.
The leak is located between the two transmission housings, not between the engine and the transmission.
The workshop wants to reseal the screws (but how are they going to do that?).
If that's not enough, the transmission will need to be removed and resealed.
Are there any experiences with this transmission? It's used in a large number of vehicles.
I'm worried that they might simply tighten the screws too much, which could cause problems later on, or that they might not be careful when removing the transmission.
I still have a 2-year warranty.

The yellow substance on the torque arm in the picture is not oil, but wax.

PS: I also have an Ibiza ASZ TDI there, and the same type of gearbox hasn't leaked after 15 years and 230,000 km.

Are you sure that's transmission fluid?

Sollte man schon am Geruch erkennen. Es kann aber auch verflüssigtes Schutzwachs sein, das sich unten am Getriebe sammelt. Or engine oil.

If you verschandeln the gearbox with brake cleaner, it should be easier to identify the source of the problem.

If there is still a warranty, your dealer should handle the issue. I don't think pursuing it further will achieve anything. If necessary, consult another dealer.

Yes, it is transmission fluid.
I've already been to two different dealers. Both of them want to seal the screws first?
I don't think this will achieve anything, and I'm already mentally preparing to remove the transmission.
There are two variations:
1. Resealing.
2. New gearbox.

In the first option, it's possible that the gearbox halves may not be perfectly flat, and you might need to return to the workshop after 1-2 years, although this is without any guarantee.
Therefore, I am in favor of the second option.

You might be in favor of option 2, but no dealer will give you that.

That's perfectly clear to me. That's why I'm looking for experiences or a TPI (Trusted Partner Insight).
I strongly believe that many people will encounter this problem.

I agree. First, we need to verschandeln everything up and figure out where the oil is actually coming from.
And this should primarily be done by a workshop.
Since the housing parts are likely sealed against each other as usual, tightening the screws to create a seal is pointless. You can only tighten them to the specified torque; nothing more.

It's coming 100% from the seam between the two gearbox halves.
I believe that sealing the screws is pointless (according to the workshop).
So, the transmission needs to be removed.
To be absolutely sure that the transmission halves are not warped or damaged, it's best to use a new transmission.

Technically, it's 100% a Volkswagen, as the sticker on the back says, but it's actually a SEAT Leon.
I spoke to the workshop manager (a Seat dealership) again.
Only the screws will be tightened; nothing else.

Then let them try. If it doesn't work out, they'll just have to try again.

The friendly mechanic has now tightened the screws. However, it hasn't made much of a difference. There is still a minimal amount of transmission oil leaking after 2000 km.

So, the next step is to remove the gearbox, disassemble it, replace the seals, and then reassemble and install it.
Are the workshops capable of doing this without me encountering more problems later, such as if a bearing wasn't properly cooled down during assembly?
What are the potential sources of error?

During the assembly of the Elsa machine, a bearing had to be cooled down to prevent damage. It's likely that this cooling is not always necessary, but without it, the bearing probably won't last very long.

It depends on whether the bearing itself needs to be cooled down individually (e.g., before being inserted into the housing?) so that its diameter shrinks slightly, or whether a bearing mounted on the shaft should be cold (i.e., cooled down along with the shaft). I suspect the former is more likely.
Where is the bearing located? Does it remain in place when the transmission housing is opened?

The instructions for disassembling and reassembling the gearbox are found in the ELSA manual. The question is, what exactly does the Seat workshop actually do?

Hi there,
It would be best if you printed out the Elsa instructions and observed the gearbox disassembly and sealing process at the workshop. That way, you can check each repair step individually and, if necessary, discuss any issues directly with the technicians who are doing the work.
What exactly do you want from us here? Do you want us to assess the quality of work done by a workshop that we are not familiar with, based on information from afar?

Best regards from Berlin,
