Upgrading your VW T6 Transporter – useful gadgets that look good and offer practical benefits ✨

A VW T6 is practical, but the factory-standard interior of the van is often quite basic. With these upgrades, the workhorse can be transformed into a more enjoyable everyday companion – everything is plug & play or can be retrofitted with minimal effort. I personally installed and tested every gadget.

Gadgets at a glance

1. Window lifter switch with chrome ring (from Golf)

The standard window switch buttons in the T6 are black, functional, but rather plain. The chrome version from the Golf 7/7.5 is in a completely different league in terms of appearance – and it's directly plug & play compatible. No coding or modifications are required. Simply carefully pry out the old switch with a plastic lever, insert the new one, and you're done. You can find them from VW original parts dealers or by searching on eBay for "chrome window switch Golf 7" (around €25-35 depending on the seller). There are also cheap Chinese imitations available, but the chrome quality is significantly worse and will peel off after a few years.

2. Light switch with chrome ring (from Audi)
Light switch chrome from Audi.jpg

Here's another detail that enhances the interior: The chrome-accented light switch from the Audi A3 8V is plug-and-play compatible with the T6. The chrome ring around the rotary switch and the finer graduation mark the difference. It also fits in the Polo 6C and Golf 7 – thanks to the VAG modular platform. You can find it at VW/Audi parts dealers or used on online marketplaces (around €30-50). Do not confuse this with the chrome light switch produced by Volkswagen itself (more expensive, rarer chrome version).

3. Cover for 12V socket (Audi 8W0919311)

Small but mighty. The original T6 cover for the 12V socket is a flimsy black rubber plug. The Audi cover (part number 8W0 919 311) is a proper flip-cover – it sits flush, looks high-quality, and provides better protection against dust. Simply pull out the old plug and push the new cover on. Available from Audi parts dealers or online. Available in black and gray.

4. Genuine leather shift bag
Genuine leather shift bag.

The standard gear knob cover in the T6 is made of artificial leather (PU) and tends to tear at the creases after about 3 years. This is also the case even if you order an "leather" version! Replacing it with genuine leather not only feels more luxurious, but also lasts much longer – practically forever. At the same time, replace the gear knob itself with a leather/aluminum version (which I already did, since I ordered the "leather" version), and the overall look will be consistent. Installation: Carefully pry off the cover on the gear knob, unscrew the Torx screw, pull off the gear knob, unclip the plastic frame, remove the old cover, and install the new one – about 20 minutes of work. Then, spend another 30 minutes trimming and attaching the genuine leather gear knob (mine was from an old BMW) using scissors and hot glue.

5. Android Car Radio (Erisin)

The original Composition Media (or even the smaller Composition Colour) is functional, but simply not modern enough by 2026. The Erisin Android radio is a direct plug-and-play replacement with CAN-bus connectivity (steering wheel buttons continue to function), a large touchscreen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, DAB+, navigation, and a reverse camera input. There are different models available for the T6 – it's important to pay attention to the correct Quadlock connector and the surrounding trim. Installation takes approximately 1-2 hours. No vehicle coding is required, but it is recommended to adjust the settings in the radio.

6. LED interior light, front

The standard incandescent bulb in the interior light is not only dim, but also gets hot. LED replacements for the T6 are available in various color temperatures (warm white to daylight white). Important for the T6: use "good quality" LEDs, otherwise they may flicker or the light color may appear unpleasant. For older T6 models (manufactured before 2019), it is essential to check beforehand whether the interior lighting can be converted to LED – some BCMs (Body Control Modules) cannot handle the lower resistance.

7. Rubber door seals (VAN-X)

The storage compartments in the T6 doors are practical, but everything slides around and rattles. The custom-made rubber inserts from VAN-X (UK) fit perfectly and dampen noise. They are available as a set for both doors (top and bottom) or as a complete set including the center console. Simply insert them, no gluing required. Available from van-x.co.uk or Amazon, approximately €25-40 per set. Shipping from the UK takes approximately 1-2 weeks.

8. VCDS HEX-NET – Diagnostics & Coding
HEX-NET-from-diesel-mechanic.jpg

The most important tool for every VW T6 owner: With VCDS HEX-NET, you can not only read and clear error codes, but also unlock hidden functions (such as coming-home lights, daytime running light configuration, staging/indicator settings, disable seatbelt warning, enable auxiliary heater, etc.). The WiFi interface makes it convenient. For troubleshooting on the go, you can work on the vehicle using a tablet or smartphone, without needing any cables. 9. Socket upgrade: 12V + 230V + USB
Power socket 12V-230V-USB.jpg

Originally, the T6 only has 12V sockets in the front. With a combination module (12V + 230V inverter + USB-C PD), the T6 becomes a mobile office. In combination with a second battery, you can charge a laptop, cooler, or tool battery without stressing the starter battery. Installation: Driver/passenger seat console or rear panel – depending on the T6 variant (Multivan/California/Panel Van). The 230V inverter (minimum 300W sine wave) requires a proper fuse and cable cross-section (16mm²). However, when I ordered it, I chose the second option. I also ordered the battery at the same time, which I would recommend (it works well and makes things stress-free).

10. Webasto timer – Upgrading from auxiliary heater to auxiliary heating system
Webasto timer-controlled auxiliary heater upgrade.jpg

Many T6 vans come with the Webasto auxiliary heater pre-installed (engine-dependent), but not with the parking heater function. The Webasto timer converts the auxiliary heater into a full-fledged parking heater – allowing you to pre-heat it via timer or remote control, which is a dream in winter. I chose the kit from Danhag. Installing the timer is plug-and-play on the Webasto control unit.

11. Wi-Fi rear-view camera with integrated LED interior lighting

Parking with the T6 is a guessing game without a camera (especially as a panel van). This Wi-Fi camera is controlled directly through the Android radio – no separate cable to the monitor, no separate screen. It's powered by the reversing light (which automatically turns it on when reversing). Mounting location: In my case, it's in a cabinet, but there are also options for license plate lights or door handles, depending on the camera model. Alternatively, there are cameras that replace the original door handle (which looks the cleanest). Installation time is approximately 2-3 hours. Are there any compatible Android radios for Erisin and other brands, priced between 40 and 80 euros, available on Amazon or AliExpress?

12. Kenwood speakers in the tailgate
Kenwood speakers in the tailgate.jpg

The standard speakers in the T6 are made of cardboard and sound accordingly. My T6 didn't even have any speakers in the back. Especially in the camper van version, it echoes a lot, and the original sound is terribly tinny. Kenwood 16.5cm coaxial speakers fit into the cutouts in the tailgate. Combined with an Android radio and a small amplifier, it sounds really good. If you want to go even further (and it's worth it): dampen the doors with aluminum-butyl mats, and then it will be quiet in the metal. There are good 2-way speakers in the front, and I chose the upgrade kit from ETON, and I've never regretted it.

13. Stainless steel charging port cover
Stainless steel charging port cover.

The loading edge is the most frequently damaged area when loading a T6 – every scratch is painful. A stainless steel cover protects the paint and looks very elegant with a brushed or polished finish. Important: Before applying, thoroughly degrease the edge and work at room temperature (the 3M adhesive only adheres to warm, verschandeln paint). Available from: VAN-X, THQ (TransporterHQ), or VW accessories, approximately €50-90.

Overall impression & experiences from the diesel mechanic forum

Many of these modifications are documented in the T6 long-term experience report – you can find more details, installation tips, and lessons learned from over 200,000 km of T6 daily use there.

And to be honest: The best gadget is still VCDS. Almost all of the modifications shown here (LED light coding, auxiliary heater recoding, unlocking comfort functions) require a diagnostic tool. Without VCDS, half of the potential features in the control unit remain hidden.

Have fun customizing your T6!
