Hi, please don't ban me from the forum right away:
Okay, so we always have heated discussions about a two-stroke diesel engine.
Some people believe it exists, while others firmly deny its existence.
It seems impossible to me too, but unfortunately, I'm not 100% sure! That's why I'm asking here (so that I can finally say YES or NO)!
If nobody knows the answer here, then nobody knows it anywhere else.

Hi,
In my opinion, ship diesel engines are two-stroke engines.

That's a huge topic.
Okay: The largest diesel engines in the world are ship diesel engines, and they are two-stroke engines (like those made by MAN, for example).
The German Museum has something like this - 2 cubic meters of displacement per cylinder.
There are also trucks with two-stroke diesel engines, but they are not used here due to emissions regulations.
Ford collaborated with ORBITAL Motors in Australia to develop an automotive engine, but the project was abandoned due to...? Exhaust problems!
All of these diesel engines have separate lubrication systems. Okay, so with oil extraction from the engine.
Greetings.

Hello, there was even a time when a 2-cylinder, 2-stroke diesel engine was used as an AIRCRAFT ENGINE!
So, I don't think I would have gotten involved in that!
And by the way: Aren't all jet engines actually diesel engines?
Diesel fuel is (almost) identical to kerosene. Gruss Ralf

For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned that most large diesel engines, while operating on a two-stroke cycle, still have valves (exhaust) in the cylinder head. Furthermore, they absolutely require a scavenging blower, because it's not possible to use the crankcase (as in a motorcycle) for this purpose.
I can scan a drawing of a MAN ship diesel engine tonight; it has a stroke of 160cm and a bore of 90cm, which are still within reasonable limits (~1000kW / cylinder).
The nominal speed is 150 RPM.
a large engine would be this:
In the post-war period, Junkers even produced an aircraft engine that operated as an opposed-piston engine using a two-stroke cycle, and it was considered very efficient and reliable. The design was already tested in 1914.

btw: in the USA, some trucks also use 2-stroke diesel engines. But they're all crazy there anyway http://www.howstuffworks.com/diesel-two-stroke1.htm.
it's unnecessary to mention that all of these engines are direct injection, and some are even TDI http://www.tpub.com/fireman/14104_files/image102.jpg.

Hi,
I'd also like to add something.
http://www.steamengine.com.au/ic/engines/simple_engine/diesel-2.html
Regarding the fundamental question: Yes, there are two-stroke diesel engines, and there are quite a few of them. Gruß Bertil

Hello,
I remember my time in the German army, specifically when I was assigned to the W15 unit. That peculiar small armored vehicle, which looks like an oversized brake shoe or wedge and is probably better known as the MTW, had a two-stroke diesel engine, but it also featured valves and a Roots blower. And that thing was incredibly fast on the highway, and it did so without a steering wheel, relying only on two brake rods.

It's quite unfair to only find out about something here and then keep the winnings from the bet for yourself. Will the people who answer questions here in the forum at least be involved?

A beautiful sound comes from the LANZ tractor. A two-stroke engine.
