Hello,

I'm planning to replace the rear shock absorbers on my Passat this weekend, and I would appreciate any tips for the removal process.

What additional specialized tool (besides spring tensioner and standard tools) is still required? For example, my old Passat required a special cartridge holder.

What additional parts are required in addition to the cartridge and self-locking nuts? -> I don't want to cycle to the spare parts store icon_eek.gif

How do you adjust the angle of the upper shock absorber mount relative to the shock absorber axis (bottom) using a protractor or eye gauge icon_eek.gif?

hi christian,

You've taken on quite a challenge. Replacing the shock absorbers themselves isn't a problem. It could even be done quite quickly, if it weren't for that damn interior trim. Have fun taking it apart and breaking your fingers.

I only needed the spring tensioner for the special tool. The rest is a piece of cake once you finally remove the rear trim. Otherwise, I didn't need to replace anything except for the new folding bellows and new impact bumpers, which I installed! But be careful: these 'penny-sized' parts cost a fortune at VW! A set of folding bellows and impact bumpers for the rear and front cost over 70 EUR! icon_evil.gif

What do you want to add ??? gas pressure ???? I didn't regret it when I had my 1Z !

Hi Joerg,

damn... I get impatient very quickly in situations like this.

ok, that's definitely a good idea to replace them too.

Well, have fun if you're not very patient!!! icon_exclaim.gif

If you switch to gas pressure at the rear, I would also switch to gas pressure at the front relatively soon. In my case, the gas pressure at the rear and the damper at the front became noticeable due to the partial rocking of the vehicle. While absolutely manageable, it was uncomfortable!

Then, 14 days later, I also installed the new gas springs and replaced the wheel bearings at the same time (don't forget to have the tracking adjusted). It was an absolutely heavenly driving experience!

Hello Christian and Jörg,

All shock absorbers work with oil. There are only different types: single-tube and double-tube shock absorbers. Single-tube shock absorbers are also called gas pressure shock absorbers (even though they use oil to dampen!). Both have advantages and disadvantages, which I will not go into further detail about now. Certainly, your advertising campaign has been a complete success icon_lol.gif
I would install the cheapest shock absorber from a well-known brand; that's perfectly sufficient and is often the original equipment.

Greetings, Albrecht

oh, ...... albrecht
Even two-pipe mufflers can be gas-tight mufflers, although with a slightly lower pressure of approximately 3 to 8 bar. The reduced pre-pressure, similar to a single-pipe muffler, reduces the formation of foam and steam bubbles. The space between the two pipes serves as a balancing chamber.

oh,... sympathy
Every shock absorber also contains gas, and I know that. The volume of the submerged piston rod must be displaced.
