Can you install a combination instrument with the MFA (Multifunction Display) from a Passat 35i B4 VR6 into a Passat TDI with a 1Z engine? I'm asking because there are many combination instruments for the VR6 offered on eBay, but none for the TDI. The only thing I would have to replace would be the bezel with the gauges, since the speedometer and tachometer readings wouldn't match. Can the combination instrument be coded to match a 4-cylinder engine? If not, I'll be extremely frustrated and will probably buy a VR6 soon and convert it to turbo.
'No, Warlord, that won't work. You need to pay attention to the 'distance number' (is that what it's called?), and that's definitely different for the VR6 compared to the TDI. Then the tachometer would go way too high...'
And it's not possible to reprogram it. The instrument cluster isn't even capable of diagnostics...
Sorry for the bad news .
Well, then the TDI engine can suddenly rev up to 7,000 RPM or more. *g* I'm not a fan of that. There are lots of VR6 instrument clusters on eBay, but none for a TDI (not even from a T4). By the way: How do you adjust the mileage if you can't even code the instrument cluster?
I'm having the same problem.
But:
Can't you simply attach the LCD with the MFA (Multifunction Display) behind the TDI speedometer instead of just a clock? Or are there missing connections on the film again?

I've been wondering about that too. But I have an idea now: What if we read the software (from the TDI instrument) and then write it to the VR6 instrument? You would need an EPROM burner for that.
