Hello.
I'm looking for a new car. It definitely has to be an Audi A4 B6 8E TDI (the current model). Now the question is, which is the 'right' engine!
The following options are available:
1.9 TDI engine with 130 horsepower (available as Quattro or front-wheel drive).
2.5 TDI with 163 hp (front-wheel drive only) or...
2.5 TDI engine with 179 horsepower (available only with Quattro all-wheel drive).
(Are the 2.5 models PD or VP?)
Each one with a 6-speed transmission!
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each engine type? Which one would you recommend? Which engine code would you advise against?
Okay, I'll briefly summarize what I know or think about each of the engines:
- The 2.5-liter engine is more expensive to purchase, and also has higher maintenance costs (e.g., timing belt replacement).
'How much should I expect to pay? Also, there's a slightly higher fuel consumption, although the 1.9-liter engine...'
'...and the RPMs are not exactly economical either.'
- The 2.5-liter engine is smoother and less strained than the 1.9-liter engine.
- The 2.5 has more power (and more weight), but does that necessarily make it 'more agile'?
(Performance is important to me!)
How do the engines react to chip tuning? Since the 1.9-liter engine is already quite stressed, this will probably be too much.
The gearboxes should be able to handle the tuning without any problems. But what does the Quattro all-wheel-drive system have to say about it?
Right now, I'm leaning towards the size 2.5.
Thank you in advance for your answers!
Best regards,
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:
'Didl' is a German word that means 'a small, round object.' It can be used to refer to a variety of things, such as a ball, a marble, or a button.

You're essentially giving yourself the answer. If you want to tune the 2.5 Quattro, what exactly do you hope to achieve with an engine that already has 50 horsepower less in its standard configuration? That leaves you with very few options. The V6 is likely smoother and more refined, while the 1.9 is more fuel-efficient. All the six-cylinder engines are VP (presumably referring to a specific model or feature).
But let me offer a small thought to get you started:
Limousine:
A4 1.9 TDI 100 hp 19/35/15 Combined/City/Highway fuel consumption.
A4 1.9 TDI 130 hp - 20/35/15
A4 2.5 TDI 155 hp 21/35/18
A4 2.5 TDI 163 hp 21/35/18
A4 2.5 TDI 180 hp 24/35/18 (Quattro)
Avant.
1.9L, 130 horsepower, 19/36/13.
2.5L, 155 hp, 19/36/16.
Okay, if you want to insure the car with VK (liability insurance), I would suggest sticking with front-wheel drive. You don't need me to explain what having 3 levels of VK means!
Would you choose a front-wheel drive 2.5 Avant?

The 1.9-liter engine is quite reliable, even when professionally tuned, and it's cheaper than the 2.5-liter engine, and it consumes about 2 liters less fuel.
There are numerous entries for the 2.5 models, and many of them describe very expensive problems.
Do you really need more power than what a well-tuned 1.9-liter engine can provide?

Hi,
The problems related to the 2.5 models mostly concern the AFB, the first V6 engine with 150 horsepower.
Regarding PD (presumably referring to a specific technology or device), one factor is the tendency for "jerking" or sudden movements. However, it remains to be seen whether current engines exhibit this behavior to the same extent with higher mileage. Gruß Christian

The 1.9 PD engine is definitely more responsive, especially at lower RPMs.
The V6 engine feels almost like a gasoline engine.
It's noticeably calmer, but still fast, and you don't really notice the difference.
It's a matter of taste.
I'm driving my first V6, and I don't think I want anything else ever again.
(Actually, an MKB AKE engine with 180 horsepower wouldn't be bad.)

Hello,
I would primarily base the decision on the intended use.
Priority: Autobahn (highway) --> 2.5 (engine size/model).
City and country road --> 1.9 inch.
I also own a 2.5 AFB engine, and I assume that its characteristics have largely remained the same, although the new 2.5 engines are undoubtedly better overall. The car is quite sluggish at intersections, and when overtaking on country roads, you have to constantly shift gears. A 1.9 100hp PD Golf 4, on the other hand, is three times more responsive. However, once you get on the highway, it can really come into its own and pulls consistently from 160 to 220 km/h. If you give it a little more time, you can definitely reach 230 km/h, and sometimes even 240 km/h. In my comparison Golf, on the other hand, the power pretty much runs out from 160 km/h, and you have to put up with being in the same class as 100hp gasoline cars on the highway.
In short, the 2.5-liter engine needs room to breathe; otherwise, it won't be fun to drive and will carbon up. This is likely the source of many problems, such as clogged intake manifolds and stuck variable geometry turbochargers.
