Comparison with gasoline engine ignition signals. The issue is as follows: http://www.tdiclub.com/articles/MFA-Conversion/ . This gentleman has modified a VR6 speedometer by adding an LED and some resistors (for the LED), and the speedometer works on the TDI (including the tachometer, which displays 33% less). Why does this work? Is the signal from the alternator pre-processed by the engine control unit and converted into pulses similar to those used in gasoline engines, or what?
Best regards, WarLord. |

Hi,
TDIs (presumably referring to certain car models) all have a gasoline direct-injection (GDI) system. This system is connected to the engine control unit (ECU) and not to the alternator. Therefore, a 6-cylinder GDI system connected to a 4-cylinder engine will only show 4/6, which is two-thirds of the cylinders.

'This is exactly what I needed. Thank you for that. The issue of the ignition coil placement keeps coming up in the 35i forum, with the gasoline ignition coils being directly connected to the ignition system and the diesel ignition coils being connected to the alternator.' However, I couldn't believe that myself (it would be ridiculous to release two different speedometers), so I did some research (including examining the wiring diagrams of a 35i model from 1995) and also found out that they are connected to the MSG (Main System Module).
Best, Alex. |
