Hi!
EIt was explained.
Now, a Trabant is much simpler than an AKU engine (although even the AKU engine, as a naturally aspirated engine, is still relatively simple). Nevertheless, I haven't found even a single piece of literature or online documentation that specifically deals with this particular AKU engine. And I don't need instructions on oil changes or windshield wiper rubber replacement (as that's not the topic).
I would like to have sectional drawings of the ESP, photos of the disassembled ESP, photos of the installed and exposed ESP, diagrams with arrows indicating the movement directions of the switchgear, a block diagram of the motor management system, diagrams with characteristic curves, and much more. And a lot of text with well-formulated, logically structured explanations.
I want knowledge.
Sometimes I get the feeling that ordinary citizens are being deliberately kept in the dark.
The fact that AKU systems (and especially DI turbo engines or CDI systems) have a very complex electronic control system with numerous sensors is not a reason to simply prevent the dissemination of knowledge.
'Anyone who wants to get involved in this should be given the opportunity. Immobilizing and disassembling a car, or scavenging parts from it at a junkyard, cannot be the solution.'
So:
Who has any tips on how I can acquire knowledge about my engine? Searching Google with 'AKU engine' or 'VW 1.7SDI' didn't yield any results .
In Take it easy.
Sure, here's the translation:
'Thank you in advance.'
Best regards,

While I don't have much knowledge about the AKU, I've driven it a few times (my then-girlfriend owned one), but it's probably quite rare, especially compared to the VW Golf TDI 1Z.
Installed in Polo and Lupo models from August 1997 to April 2000.
Have you ever stressed a bookstore by ordering all sorts of "Polo" car repair manuals from them "for viewing"? Gondrom once ordered some "Golf TDI" books for me – I ended up buying one of them.
There will be (not a big) difference compared to your Arosa, whether it's in the engine or anything else.
Basically, it's a neutered male cat.
- No turbo, therefore no liquid cooling.
- less lift.
- probably also a VP37.
- Throttle valve (the TDI engine does not have one).
I haven't been able to find the specific data fields, etc., that you're looking for for my 1Z either.
Even the repair manual for the 1Z, which you can buy for 20 EUR from erwin.volkswagen.de, doesn't really reveal much new information.

Are you sure that the AKU was only installed up to the year 2000?
On the VW website, there's still a 1.7 SDI model available (is that the AKU engine? Or are there other SDI engines?). At least, that's what I saw a little while ago on a VW page I found through Google.
Now I understand why the technical literature was so extensive. With 40 years of model development. Although, there were at least 3 different engines (with detailed differences) over that time.
Zu Deinen Schrauberbüchern: Sind das auch keine stupiden Anleitungen, sondern auch Abhandlungen über Funktionsprinzipien einzelner Baugruppen? Dann hätte ich Interesse an den Buchtiteln. WiWhat is their name?
In my library, I only found one book about the Lupo/Arosa, and it was at the level of a windshield wiper blade replacement guide.
Best regards,

I have the "How it's done" guide.
This is a bit more sophisticated than the "Do-it-yourself" books.
But I'm also always looking for more detailed information.
Only when I visit VW every time and realize that my layman's knowledge of the 1Z engine is completely useless to the workshop masters, do I wonder why there are still TDIs that actually work and haven't been prematurely "repaired" and broken during the first oil change...
The information regarding the construction period comes directly from Volkswagen.
There was another nuclear power plant with the same performance data, operating from November 1997 to August 1999.
At least in the Polo 6N2, a diesel version was available as of 11/99.
1.7 SDI 60 hp (AKU)
1,9 SDI 68 ? PS (?AEY?)
1.4 TDI 75 hp (?AMF?)
The 1.7 model is then extinct, and in the 9N, there was...
1.9 SDI
1.9 TDI 100 hp
1.4 TDI, 75 horsepower.
and now also the 1.9 TDI 130 hp (see Ulf's racing bread roll).

- Throttle valve (the TDI does not have this)
It's better to call it an intake manifold valve. 'Throttle valve' sounds like it belongs to a gasoline engine.
Apparently, it's supposed to assist the AGR (Abgasrückführung) system, because it's closed at idle and only opens under moderate load. If it were just a shut-off valve, it would open when the engine starts and remain open afterward.

And what's the engine displacement of the 1Z? (because: unneutered AKU)
If the crankshaft, connecting rod, pistons, and the relevant bearings in the (low-load) AKU engine are the same as those in the 1Z engine, then the AKU is considerably more robust. It's essentially a marine diesel engine.
Anyway, thanks for the book recommendation, and good night.

The 1Z is __THE__ TDI .
That's the good old 1.9-liter engine with 90 horsepower.
I didn't mean "castrated" in the sense of "identical construction" as you understood it.
Solely due to the difference in the hub, the crankshaft cannot be the same.
The 1.4 TDI is essentially a neutered version of the 1.9 TDI, but not in terms of displacement, but rather in terms of the number of cylinders (it has one fewer cylinder, with the same displacement and bore).
Good night.

I often have the same impression. Every independent repair shop certainly has access to extensive technical documentation for every vehicle. Unfortunately, the manufacturers do not make these documents publicly available. It's also in their interest that the customer visits a workshop, preferably a large, prominent one with the company logo displayed.
So, we are left with the book series "So wird's gemacht" (This is how it's done) and "jetzt 'mache' ich's mir selbst" (Now I'm doing it myself). However, these unfortunately describe more of the simpler tasks. You won't gain extensive knowledge about your own vehicle from these books. These books were much more detailed 20 years ago. While the scope has grown, the number of body, equipment, and engine variants has increased so much that they no longer even bother to include extensive technical data. Is it to avoid boring the windshield wiper with tedious details?
@SeatArosa1.7SDI: I only see one possibility for you: that a friendly automotive professional might provide you with their documents and a copier for a few hours. Alternatively, a PC with a CD burner. Unfortunately, this is rather unlikely.

surf now on http://aa.bosch.de/aa/de/fachliteratur/index.htm and order the 'yellow books'.
Otherwise, Google is definitely your friend!
For example, you can browse the tech news section at www.tuneline.at.
You can also politely ask someone if you can discuss the topic of SSP with them.
