What is this system? How do I replace it? How can I install a different radio?

It's about the fact that I removed my JVC radio from my old Passat and now I want to install it in my new Passat.

Best regards, WarLord.

It should probably fit... if the connectors match. Sometimes an adapter is needed, and that's usually included with the radio (it was with my Sony). You definitely need an antenna adapter because the great VW antenna requires extra power for a good reception... but other people have had that problem too. icon_idea.gif

How can I identify the active system, or determine if I even have one?

Best regards, WarLord.

As far as I know, it includes a digital sound processor, or alternatively, a separate subwoofer.

Otherwise, you only have a standard option.

Remember that the constant power and ignition power connections need to be swapped on VW vehicles, and you might also need a phantom power supply for the antenna.
For simplicity, you buy a VW - JVC adapter. icon_wink.gif

No, that's clear (regarding the power lines and the antenna). It was already like that in my 35i as well (although different). I won't buy an adapter; simply swapping the positive and ignition positive wires also works, and I already have an antenna adapter.

Best regards, WarLord.

Hi,

I can only tell you how it is with the active speakers in my 1998 A3. I don't know if that will be helpful to you, though...
I have regular speakers in the front, and active speakers in the sides at the back.

Best regards, Rainer.

How did you recognize them?

Best regards, WarLord.

Greetings, WarLord
.
It was probably mentioned in some Audi brochure for my car... I don't know, maybe Bertil also commented on it in the old diesel enthusiast forum...
The voltage levels required to control the amplifiers on the speakers need some rather unusual levels, around ~5V s . That is, normal line-out signals are far too quiet, and the normal speaker outputs will completely overdrive the active speakers.
So, either connect the Potis to the speaker outputs, or your JVC might have "High-Power Line-Out" outputs, just like mine does...
What kind of connectors are on the back of the original radio?

Best regards, Rainer.
