Dr. Helmut Endres, executive director of powertrain development for the entire VW Group, has announced the new 2005/2006 VW PD-TDI engine lineup:
Three-cylinder TDI – 1.4-liter turbo engine, 75 BHP.
Four Cylinder – 2-liter, non-turbo engine with 74 BHP, turbo engine with 138 BHP, and 175 BHP.
Five-cylinder engine – R5, 2.5-liter turbo, 174 BHP.
Six-cylinder V-6 engines are being phased out in favor of inline-5 engines.
Eight Cylinder – 4-liter V-8 270BHP
Ten-cylinder engine – 5-liter V-10 producing 330 horsepower, with a more powerful version delivering 400+ horsepower expected soon.

Are they really going to convert it from CR to PD?
Interestingly, I read a while ago that VAG intends to focus on CR (Common Rail) technology in the long term.

Is the new 3-liter engine not a CR (compression ignition) engine? Or am I mistaken? 01er Skoda Fabia Combi ATD

No, it's fine... the V8-TDI is a common-rail engine.
Let's see which paper is correct .

It would be great if all engines used PD injection.

In my opinion, it's simply the better technology. Higher injection pressures result in finer atomization. Theoretically, it offers the potential for more power. If Common Rail technology will also enable pressures of 2700 bar in the near future, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Best regards, WarLord.

Hello everyone,
I was just reading today that Audi is supposedly going to release a new V6 TDI engine. This was mentioned in an article about the new Audi A6. The engine is supposedly going to be available from early 2005. The V6 is said to have a displacement of 2.7 liters and around 175 horsepower.
It's a shame that you can't get such a part for the Golf .

Audi has already introduced the completely redesigned 3.0-liter TDI engine in the new A6. This V6 is a common-rail diesel engine, and it is already available for purchase. The 175 hp TDI V6 is now intended to bridge the performance gap to the approximately 220 hp of the 3.0-liter TDI.

Greetings, WarLord.
The only advantage of direct injection (PD) is the injection pressure, and even that benefit is only realized at high engine speeds.
'With a CR pump, I can set the maximum pressure even at 1500 rpm. Alternatively, at high speeds, I can also set it to the minimum pressure because I'm operating at partial load. Furthermore, I have complete freedom in shaping the injection profile, as I no longer have to consider any camshafts. I can perform up to 7 individual injections within a cycle.'
I can vary the injection pressure during the injection process, allowing me to optimize the injection profile for each specific situation.
In the off-highway sector, pressure-transfer systems are already in use. This means that, similar to a hydraulic press (where a large piston presses on a smaller piston), the pressure at the nozzle is increased, reaching levels comparable to those in common rail systems (injection pressure of 2200-2500 bar, pressure in the rail of 500-1000 bar).
This flexibility is something that PD will never be able to offer, which is why I believe they will eventually disappear.
By the way, the older 3.0 TDI engine was also a common rail diesel.

However, I believe that high injection pressures have a significant disadvantage. At least in a 4-cylinder engine, this is quite noticeable. Specifically, it affects the engine's running smoothness and the resulting noise. In my opinion, you can hear the high injection pressures of a PD engine, while CR engines don't produce such noises and run more smoothly.
That is probably more of a comfort issue. VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

That's the joke about CR.
By completely decoupling it from a cam, I can shape the injection process as I desire.
This also ensures that the combustion process is controlled appropriately, even under high pressure. That's why CR engines run so smoothly.
A VP44 pump can also generate 1800 bar of pressure at the injector.

Hello.
The fight begins, CR or PD? In terms of running culture, CR is superior to PD. I wouldn't say the same about performance. Siemens, Bosch, etc. are building a new research and development center for PD here. If they were betting on CR, I don't think they would do that. The question is, why isn't the V6 available as a PD? As far as I know, the VP44x is still active there... Maybe CR is simply easier to control and cheaper. Oh, and there's also the noise of the PD...
Perhaps, at some point, we will switch back to VP again...
Best regards, Manuel.

There is a valid development contract for Piezoelectric Polymer (PD) elements. In the second step, even a mechanical decoupling from the actuator is planned. This would combine the advantages of both the CR (presumably referring to a different technology) and the PD elements.

Siemens even speaks of 9, and in the future, even 11. It is also possible to implement a (multiple) NOx-reducing pre-injection (at the expense of some performance). Gruß Bertil

If VW is really planning to switch to CR (compression ratio), you smart people need to start preparing earlier.
or even later, a 10-cent adjustment could be made for it.
Good luck!
