Steering Wheel Noise: Causes & Solutions

I'm simply guessing that the problem is caused by the rotation of the steering column shaft being obstructed by the motor splash shield.
Try the following while the vehicle is stationary: When you turn the steering wheel slightly, listen for any grinding or squeaking noises.
If so, then a simple lubrication application to the rotating joint (radial seal between the steering column and the engine block) will suffice.
The noise you're hearing likely occurred while driving because the steering system tends to slightly oscillate when turning, especially during initial steering input.

This noise only occurred for me when the weather was quite warm.

Alternatively, it could be the contact point of the horn, or the roll/coil/or-whatever-it's-called cable that transmits signals for the airbag, although in that case, it would likely occur in other driving situations as well.

Are you sure?

Because, in my opinion, there's no grinding involved there; that's actually the trick of this winding mechanism – unlike the sliding contact used for the horn.
