Hello,
While reading the error memory of my Passat 1.9 TDI, manufactured in 2000, I noticed that the workshop code (WSC) of the instrument cluster contains a different workshop code than all the other control units.
Address 17: Instruments.
Controller: 3B0 920 802 A
Component: B5-COMBINATION INSTRUMENT. VDO V22
Coding: 05145
Shop #: WSC 67083
The WSC code for all other control units is consistently WSC 00028.
I conclude that modifications to the instrument cluster were made by '67083'.
'67083' is the workshop code of the VAG dealer where I had my vehicle serviced when it was one year old and had approximately 25,000 km on the odometer, according to... I bought a speedometer.
Should I be concerned that the speedometer in my vehicle has been tampered with, or what other reason could there be to reprogram the control unit later on?
Is the mileage still stored in other control units? What can I do to dispel the suspicion?
Thank you! |

For example, when replacing a defective AI (artificial intelligence) unit.
As far as I know, with standard dealer software, it's only possible to modify the mileage counter within the first 100(?) kilometers.
If he were to, of course, install a new AI system specifically to program a lower mileage reading and extract more money from the car, then that could certainly be an explanation... Gruß Ulf

Hello,
To my knowledge, the mileage of your car is not stored in any other control units.
It might be worth checking with the previous owner listed in the vehicle registration document to find out what mileage the car had when they sold it.

Hmm, that makes me think.
Can I determine, using the diagnostic information, whether it's still the original AI? Production date, etc.? |

Hi,
Perhaps the seller only performed a visual inspection and reset the maintenance interval.
You can also do that with the tester; it's not just about the keyboard shortcut when you turn on the ignition.
Since this is an access, the WSC (Web Services Client) will also be set.

I find it rather unlikely that the service interval display can be checked and reset. Since the purchase four years ago, the vehicle has been to numerous inspections at various VAG workshops, but the WSC (presumably a software control unit) has not been changed since 2000!
I checked it on a Golf car belonging to an acquaintance: Even after several inspections, the WSC (presumably a vehicle identification code) had not been changed!
What is the usual procedure for resetting the service interval at VAG workshops? |

It's enough to either modify the function's code or adjust it so that different code is used in its place.
Sometimes, even brand new cars are delivered with different WKS codes.
You really can't go there after that.
Do you have any other reasons to suspect that the speedometer has been tampered with?
Ask your dealer to find out who that dealer is (perhaps their information is listed in the service booklet under 'delivering dealer'), and then simply call them.
Maybe he did something once. |

The WSC (Vehicle Specific Code) registered in the AI (Artificial Intelligence) system exactly matches the VAG (Volkswagen Group) workshop where I purchased the vehicle! |

'I experienced the same thing - all the other control units had a different but identical code, except for the instrument cluster (KI), which had the dealer's code when I bought it...' |
