Hello everyone,

I've already searched the internet extensively for information on this topic, but I haven't found much.
With that in mind, I hope you can help me with this topic.

I plan to buy an older Passat (roughly from the year 1992 or later, diesel or TD model) to use as a 'workhorse' that I don't have to worry about as much (regarding scratches, dirt, etc.) as I do with my Golf. icon_biggrin.gif

Since the main factor for me when buying a second car is the cost, I plan to acquire a vehicle with engine damage or, at the very least, very high mileage.

My plan is to replace the engine and related components (including the engine control unit, transmission, etc.) with a used 1.4-liter TDI engine with the smallest possible displacement (keyword: taxes). I'm not concerned about performance in this vehicle, so I'm considering a '1.4-liter TDI' with 55 kW (75 hp) from VW, the same one that's used in the Polo.

Since I had never performed an engine conversion before, I had some questions.

- Does the 1.4-liter engine actually fit in the Passat?
- Was muss alles geändert werden? (Getriebe? Auspuffanlage? Engine mount?
- What costs should one expect for a 1.4L TDI engine? It can have quite a few miles on it.
- Is it something that can be done by someone with basic skills, or does it require a specialized workshop?
- Is it even possible to get an engine like that registered?

As you can tell from these questions, I am a complete beginner when it comes to engine conversions, but I am eager to learn, and I have plenty of time for this project over the winter icon_smile.gif.

Okay, many newbie questions, I'm sure you can help me with those, as I've discovered there are plenty of experts here on board icon_smile.gif.

Thank you very much!

To be honest:

I believe this project is a waste of money and time.

The Passat 35i (model years 1988-1993, and as a facelift model in 1996) was available with a 1.6 TD LLK engine producing 80 horsepower, and a 1.9 TD engine producing 75 horsepower, later with 90 and 110 horsepower TDI engines.

Your conversion will trigger such a massive amount of paperwork (individual inspections at the TÜV, etc.) that the argument of "saving taxes" will immediately negate itself.
It's questionable anyway what emission class you will be assigned to.
A 1984 Golf 2 naturally aspirated diesel, even with a catalytic converter, already meets Euro 2 standards, just like a 1996 TDI.

Furthermore, once you have the engine installed, you will likely need to replace bearings every two months and other components as needed, especially if you acquire a used "base vehicle."

Buy an old car and leave it as it is.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

I'd like to get an old Golf 2 (60 hp naturally aspirated diesel) or a 6N (but not an SDI!) from the postal service and convert it to run on vegetable oil. That's it. It doesn't cost much, you pay very little in taxes because it's classified as a truck, and the fuel is also cheap. And if something breaks, you can find many parts at the scrapyard.
The only catch: The tax office needs to cooperate...

Forget about the truck issue; there's already been a lot of information available on that.

Why specifically the Kat diesel (1V) from the G2?
Like all other Golf 2 diesels, it only meets Euro 1 standards, so even with a catalytic converter, it's not any cheaper.

But we're already using Poelen - we're driving our leisure T3 bus with 100% original Poelen fuel.

Okay, I'd also advise against that. Why put a 1.4-liter engine in a Passat? Ignoring the TÜV (technical inspection) and emissions test requirements for a moment, it will be a financial black hole. You're essentially putting a 3-cylinder engine into a 4-cylinder car. So, if you want to save money, consider a Golf 2 with a relatively high emissions standard. Invest some money in an engine conversion, and you'll have a decent vehicle.

Forget about the truck thing. There's already been a lot of information about it.

I wouldn't say that. It really varies from one government agency to another. Post vehicles, for example, have the advantage of already being two-seaters from the factory...
Otherwise, register the thing as a tractor icon_lol.gif.

It is highly likely that a used diesel car has not been cherished, pampered, or carefully warmed up, and has instead experienced many starts, little long-distance driving, but a frustrated, somewhat immature, and respectable driver at the wheel icon_confused.gif. I didn't want to drive something like that.
I once worked at the post office during my school years, and they really mistreat their vehicles.

Buying a used car is always a gamble, but in this case, it's like playing with a terrible hand.
