Hi,
Yesterday, a subtle 'rumble' alerted me to a connection between the middle and...
The rear muffler is crumbling. The turbo is now more noticeable; otherwise, the sound is...
He was, as usual, unremarkable.
It then became apparent on stage that the pipe was directly connected to the MSD (Main Switching Device).
After more than seven years / 240,000 km, I think that's okay.
Etwas erschrocken war ich allerdings über den Zustand des ESD. He's only been...
February 2002, and it will likely not make it to the next TÜV inspection appointment in March.
Okay, it's probably better to just switch it out now (because, according to Murphy's Law, it'll break if I try to fix it later).
to remove the pipe stub to the MSD.
Does anyone have a recommendation for reasonably affordable silencers?
and yet, what are they worth?
The current EDS is from Walker - that wasn't good enough.
You also only hear horror stories about Bosal parts from the open market.
Stainless steel (brands like FOX, Bastuck, etc.) is nice, but it also comes with a corresponding high price.
Ernst
Eberspächer
...
Best regards, Rudi.

'ernst' is exactly the same.
My wife's old Opel Corsa received something like that two and a half years ago due to a lack of time and money, etc. Well, it wouldn't have passed the next technical inspection (TÜV) next spring anyway, unless someone had dismantled the car in the late spring!
'About two years ago, I installed a new Bosal exhaust system under my old Passat 35i. However, I did some preparation work beforehand, including applying heat-resistant paint. So far, *knocking on wood*, there's no visible rust from the outside. However, I'm sure there's rust from the inside! The worst areas are the welds where the pipe connects to the muffler. If you apply some kind of rust protection there, you'll likely have peace of mind for 4-5 years, regardless of which so-called OEM quality supplier you choose.'

As joergs already mentioned, the problem lies with the welds.
Two weeks ago, the MSD (manifold) or the pipe leading to the ESD (exhaust system) broke off. My first thought was to contact Bosal because I hadn't heard any negative experiences about them from people around me; in fact, I had heard the opposite!
In the end, I got lucky rather than clever, and I managed to acquire a new, original VAG MSD through a well-known auction house.
Price NEW (VAG) = ~240 EUR.
Price (including shipping): €20.50.
In short, what I'm trying to say is that there are alternatives to buying new, and as you can see from my example, it even had the original VAG sticker on it.

Hmph...
I just had a quick phone call.
Leistritz: €250, including small items. Bosal: Slightly cheaper. Walker: The dealer's reaction: 'No...'
VW wants 420 euros, and Bastuck starts at 600 euros.
Egedöns ( (c) joergs) currently has nothing to do with VAG.
It looks like we'll be using the Leistritz machine and then preserving the parts.
@joergs:
What do you mean by 'etc.'? A specific type of primer?
Best regards, Rudi.

Check this out...
http://www.auto-teile-weiss.de/
That's probably the cheapest option I know of... and if it lasts for 2-3 years, it will have been worth the money.
I didn't do anything special. I just cleaned the areas where there was damage and then applied a few layers of zinc spray. I let it dry completely and then applied two layers of heat-resistant paint. (…and hope it lasts for a few more days…)
Does the HSD (hydraulic suspension damping) from a Passat actually fit your car? I think I still have one that you might be interested in!
ps: The Audi is running like a wild beast... even with regular fuel!

Evening.
The Bosal 233 245 is the central silencer for the Variant/1Z model. The listed price in Austria is 121.36 plus 20% VAT. I installed it in June and paid around 88€ for it, including a clamp. I find the prices that Rudi posts to be outrageous.
Best regards, Robert.

Hi,
@Jörg:
Nice link... one wonders if the packaging is made of cardboard wrapped in aluminum foil, or how they can possibly charge such prices.
(or what the profit margins are on the parts )
ps: It's good that it's running .
@Robert:
The prices are for MSD, ESD, and assembly kit (I could have also mentioned the assembly kit again earlier ).
Best regards, Rudi.

'This guy also makes fart jokes and gets good reviews... (which, of course, doesn't mean much). Generally, I think the profit margins are huge, and some people are trying to get incredibly rich. If I remember correctly, I paid 160 tux for the HSD and NSD parts for the Passat, and also for the Bosal parts.'

Hi,
There are also significant differences in quality among replica parts. You can safely disregard brands like Bosal and Walker, unless you're content with a lifespan of only two years.
Leistritz offers two series, but the version with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) quality costs a bit more. I've also had good experiences with Eberspächer.
VAG pots come from a wide variety of manufacturers, including some smaller companies.
Regarding the welds, etc.:
Sure, the exhaust systems are the most susceptible to damage there, but not necessarily due to external corrosion, but because the microstructural changes caused by welding also leave traces inside, making them more vulnerable to corrosion from condensation.
I have never worked on such components, and I don't think that this process increases their lifespan. The problem is always the combination of vibration and corrosion, and there is plenty of vibration in a diesel engine.
Logically, I wouldn't install a high-quality "long-lasting" original system in a car that I might only drive for another one or two years. However, if I plan to keep it for more than three years, it's worth considering the slightly more expensive option because of the labor involved and, in some cases, the poor sound quality of a cheap aftermarket alternative.

Evening.
How is the condensation situation with the TDI? I haven't noticed any significant warming of the silencer, which would be necessary for condensation to occur. Or is that also due to the different composition of the exhaust gases? The last reason for replacing the exhaust was the section above the rear axle, which was completely corroded. Although the noise from the Agassstrom wasn't the main reason, it was the fact that the pipes were loose and rattling against each other in certain load ranges.
"On my Benzin-Lacina motorcycles, I installed drainage holes in the lowest points of the exhaust system and the mufflers. This significantly improved their longevity."
Best regards, Robert.

I'm reluctant to contradict, but regarding the issue of internal damage and vibrations. I've seen rust in close proximity to the welds on many exhaust systems. This isn't surprising. The material is hot-dip galvanized, and then it's welded. Despite the use of shielding gas (in the cheaper products, the part to be welded was probably only near the shielding gas atmosphere ), the corrosion protection layer is damaged, which then leads to rust... and this happens even from the outside.
