Hello,
'In everyday city driving, I have the problem of not being able to reach an oil temperature of around 70°C. This leads to cold starts and forces me to adopt a constant warm-up driving style.'
Generally speaking, the TDI engine has a very high efficiency, and the thermostat doesn't even open until the operating temperature is reached.
Question:
Does the old cardboard placed in front of the radiator still provide some benefit, or does it not matter, or does it ultimately cause harm? Does the thermostat mechanically close the cooling circuit, or does it only control the pump?
Consideration:
Even without an open thermostat, cold air flows through the radiator into the engine compartment, causing (too much) cooling. Even without the pump running, water circulates due to thermal movement and cools the engine (excessively).
Is it all nonsense?
I don't know.
Thank you and goodbye.

Partially yes.
The thermostat mechanically opens the main cooling circuit.
It takes me about 15 minutes to reach operating temperature, which is perfectly normal.
But check the thermostat: simply stop frequently while driving and touch the lower radiator hose that leads to the radiator. As soon as it becomes warm, the thermostat has opened.
The pump is constantly running and only circulates water within the engine (small circuit). 1993 Audi 80 B4 1Z

That's precisely why I think the cardboard would make a difference.
How much, but that's another question...
Unfortunately, with our digital trains , it seems you have to pay more attention than with the old steam engines that had a "direct" thermometer, probably because of the cardboard used in their construction .
There, any degree above the normal temperature could be recognized as a potential sign of overheating, and the gas pedal could be adjusted accordingly.
Our readings only exceed the normal 90° mark (but then very rapidly), when the actual temperature is already 100 or more }. Gruß Ulf

So, always run the laptop with VAGCOM and a real-time temperature display in the background .

'I tried this last winter (or maybe it was two years ago) on my 35i to test if the thermostat was faulty. The cardboard didn't make a noticeable difference at around -2 degrees Celsius. (But the thermostat was still broken...)'

Yes, I also tried installing a radiator last winter, but it wasn't really worth the effort. Especially with a Golf IV, everything has to be disassembled for that, and if you're potentially driving on the highway, the cooling system should work properly anyway.
If you have access to one, you can try it out yourself, but I would recommend using something made of plastic in the spray area.

You can forget all of that... unless you simply believe in it. Then they become warm thoughts directly.
Last winter, in addition to the cooler, I also put a piece of cardboard in front of the air intake for the engine's oil cooler on my Fabia, but it had no noticeable effect other than that on warm spring days on the highway, nothing was possible at vmax.
The only real solution is a parking heater...

'Because my old heater was taking too long to warm up, I welded two custom-made stainless steel pieces with a 12x1.25 thread and conical seat onto an 8cm diameter, 20mm thick stainless steel pipe on both sides, in the middle. Two glow plugs are screwed into these pieces and controlled by...'
'I salvaged a rear window defroster switch and one relay from a junkyard, and I attached them to the inlet of the heater core using hose clamps. It's not a sand heating system, but it definitely makes a noticeable difference. In the future, I plan to install a thermostat that will turn off the candles when they reach approximately 55 degrees Celsius. This is already standard in later TDIs, which have three candles and an integrated control system.'

I have one too, and unfortunately, I have to say that it's not the best, and certainly not the fastest, supplemental heater.
A standard glow plug heating system wouldn't be out of place either .
In this case as well, the theory differs from practice.
Sometimes, in the winter, after starting the engine cold, I have to endure being very cold myself, just so that the engine can reach its operating temperature, because if I turn the heater on full blast from the front, neither of us benefits from .
Then both of us (the engine and I) won't be able to start working until we thaw out .
That's all there is to say about Volkswagen's development performance...

and the money saved is used to heat the interior with a Webasto heater, just like you have!

I heat with an Eberspächer .
but to avoid losing the original post completely.
obenbeimutti: you don't really have a choice. The TDI engine simply doesn't burn much diesel fuel into the coolant.
I can watch the thermometer drop in the morning as I ride down the long hill to work.
I was at the Wasserkuppe this weekend. The machine was running at 90 degrees. Then I drove down to Gersfeld... the machine was cold... that's just how it is...
Heated seats are awesome...

Webasto , their capital boss .
The resale value of my car will soon be less than the cost of the good auxiliary heater.
But if I were a clever tinkerer, I would consider installing some kind of makeshift glow plug system.
It would be interesting to know if you can obtain the necessary parts from scrapped vehicles and whether adapting those parts into an AFN G3 causes any problems.
Best regards,
