Hello,
This morning, I started my Golf III TDI 1Z and noticed a squeaking sound for the first time when starting it up. It sounded like a slipping belt.
It stopped pretty quickly, so I didn't pay much attention to it after that.
After driving approximately 50 kilometers, the power steering suddenly failed.
After another 5 kilometers, the temperature gauge slowly started to rise from its normal reading. I then stopped the engine and checked it.
There is enough coolant in the system.
There is enough power steering fluid (ATF) in the system.
Does anyone happen to have any ideas about what might be causing this? And more importantly, whether there might be a central reason that connects all three symptoms?
Thank you very much in advance...
Best regards.
Oliver.

Have you checked to see if the serpentine belt is still there? B.Eng (FH) u. KFZ Meister

Let me preface this by saying: I don't know exactly how the 1Z is structured.
But based on the symptoms, it occurs to me that...
ev. der Keilriemen die Wasser- und Servopumpe antreibt. You had...
A squeaking sound is heard. If the timing belt slips now, or even breaks...
It completely resolved the issue with the drive, and then the symptoms disappeared.
I would start by checking the V-belt pulley.

Thank you both very much...
My initial suspicion was that the problem was with the serpentine belt, but it was still in place.
After you both expressed the same suspicion, I went back to the car and checked it thoroughly. The 1Z engine has not only a wide serpentine belt but also a narrower belt that drives only the power steering pump and the water pump. And that one is indeed defective.
Now, another question arises for me.
Is the coolant circulation only ensured by the pump? Or is there some kind of self-regulation that would allow me to drive the approximately 2 kilometers to the workshop with it?
Best regards.
Oliver.

Hello,
'If the engine is cold, you can still drive the 2 kilometers to the workshop!'

Hello,
I experienced almost the exact same issue on Friday... (Volkswagen Passat, year of manufacture 1993, engine code 1Z).
Power steering has failed after a squealing noise from the belt.
The belt was broken, so I just put a new one on without checking anything... then I started it up and the servo oil started to boil... what a huge mess!
'The housing of the external reservoir on the power steering pump is broken... so a new pump is needed.'
You should check to see if it's still intact.
In my case, the V-belt only runs over the crankshaft and power steering pump; the water pump is driven by a ribbed belt.
Greetings.

The cage from the outer housing of the power steering pump is broken... so, a new pump is needed.
Since the old belt was lying torn in the engine compartment and looked really worn out, I assume it's just the belt that needs replacing. But I'll check that tomorrow.
Thank you all very much.
Best regards.

An update, for those who are interested, or for those who find this thread because they later experience the same symptoms:
If there's an air conditioning system, the cooling water pump and the power steering pump are likely driven by the thin belt, while the A/C compressor is still driven by the heavy ribbed belt.
If there is no air conditioning system, the thin belt only drives the power steering pump. In this case, the water pump is driven by the ribbed belt.
According to the book 'Now I'll do it myself, Volkswagen Golf III,' that's what I learned.
Best regards.
Oliver.

Is your vehicle not regularly maintained?
Because then something like that almost can't happen to you.
Unless the generator seizes up and the belt is damaged as a result.
Okay, definitely try to see if everything is still rotating/spinning. B.Eng (FH) u. KFZ Meister

'A completely new engine (including a new ESP, oil pump, injectors, etc.) was installed approximately 15 months ago. Therefore, I would rule out the water pump seizing. As for the power steering, I'm not sure.'
The parts list for the installation includes both a V-belt and a Micro-V belt. So, you're probably right about that...
I'll have it checked out tomorrow if the Volkswagen workshop has an appointment available for me.
Thank you for the information.

How difficult is it to turn the pulleys for the V-belts under normal circumstances?
The water pump's impeller spins with virtually no resistance.
I can't turn the steering pump pulley by hand. I think Stefan might be right with his suggestion.
Unless an aggregate becomes lodged and the belt is thereby damaged.
So, definitely try to see if everything is still turning.!
Oh, what a pain... / This is such a nuisance... / What a bummer...
Can a power steering pump be repaired, or is it impossible?
Best regards.
Oliver.

The pump should turn relatively easily; otherwise, it's probably broken.
It is possible to get the pump working again, but only if you can do it yourself.
'Then it depends on the extent of the damage. If only the bearings are damaged and everything else is fine, then you can replace the bearings... since they are simple and inexpensive to buy. (I'm probably going to do that with mine.)'
For all other types of damage, it usually doesn't make sense... because financially, it only pays off if you can fix two things at once. Also, they often don't last very long.
A used pump costs around 40 euros, while a new one originally cost about 370 euros.
When purchasing, pay attention to the position of one hose connection. There are two versions available: one with a horizontal connection and another angled backwards. You need to check which version is compatible with your setup.
I have the one with the horizontal connection; it's a bit less common.
Greetings.
