hello
'Does anyone have an idea on how I can disable the ABS for off-road driving without getting an error message? Would a simple switch be sufficient, and if so, where would be the most sensible place to install it?'
'Again, this is only for off-road use.'
'Thank you.'

At the driving school, the instructor in the Golf IV simply pulled out the corresponding fuse to demonstrate what ABS does in snow and ice. Given how routinely he did it, I can't imagine that it created any error messages. Or maybe he didn't care.
The first ABS vehicles actually still had this switch to disable the system. Typ89 SB: 05/2000 120.000km - 01/2005 295.000km (unfall)
B5 Avant AEB 07/2005 166.000km ( [email protected]) - 07/2007 195.000km (verkauft)
1K BMM: 03/2011 120.000 km - aktuell

hello
I simply wanted to avoid the easy solution of just blowing a fuse. If it's that simple, I could install a protected circuit, put a switch in the distribution box, and the problem would be solved.
I'm familiar with the feature of having a switchable ABS in some vehicles, I just don't know how it's implemented in those cases.
Regarding the error message, I can't really say much. My ABS system works perfectly fine, but in extreme situations, the ABS light comes on, and sometimes I also get a parasitic error. This is because I no longer have a freewheel on my Syncro; it was removed to make way for the air lock in the rear axle and for better off-road capabilities.
'Maybe someone still has an idea where I can connect the switch in between if it works without problems, thanks in advance.'

Whether removing the ABS fuse will trigger an error message in the control unit depends entirely on the vehicle.
In older models, data is often not saved because the control unit is not connected to any other control units.
In newer cars, the ABS system is also connected to the CAN data bus, so another control unit 'notices' that it is no longer receiving a signal from the ABS and stores this as an error code.

hello
Sorry, I somehow didn't mention what kind of vehicle it is. I promise to do better and will always include that information from now on. It's a T4 Syncro, model year 2000. Sorry again.
As I mentioned, I want to bypass this error message, and that's why I need a lot of suggestions.
Thank you, Peter.

Unfortunately, disabling the ABS is prohibited due to a regulation from the EU, which, as always, seems very sensible. I used to have it in my Audi 100 (Type 44), and I miss it when there's snow or ice. Gruß Christian

Hello,
Hmm... Does removing the fuse then lead to the loss of the ABE (General Operating Permit)? In other words, if something explodes and the expert then determines that there was no fuse installed...?
Okay, you could insert a broken one, but it would be interesting to know the reasons behind that decision.
@Peter: What bothers you about error entries? As long as it doesn't result in an emergency situation and you have VAGCOM to clear them before taking it to a workshop, it shouldn't have any disadvantages (assuming it's allowed).

hello
@christians
As I mentioned above, disabling the ABS is only interesting to me when I'm driving on private property. Therefore, I'm not concerned with the regulations that apply on public roads, as I will only use this function when accessing areas off public roads.
@jan6k
What bothers me about the error entry is that I don't want to have to constantly carry a laptop with me in the field just to delete my error entries when I'm there.
Regarding your question about the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), it's a very sensitive issue. I work and am writing my thesis at an expert office (officially certified and sworn), and we often deal with legal cases related to this topic. The problem with ABS deactivation or a faulty system is that you have to prove whether the ABS was functioning correctly during the accident or not. In most cases, based on the evidence or, if possible, through investigations and tests after the accident, it's possible to determine whether the ABS was working. However, if the road was wet or in certain road conditions, it's impossible to determine whether the ABS was functioning or whether it was damaged during the accident. Ultimately, it depends on the judge.
'This requires judicial evaluation,' a beautiful expression.
I hope I was able to help you.

Hey guys,
I don't know what electronic aids your 2000s T4 has, but in my G IV 4motion, pulling the ABS fuse off-road actually has a disadvantage because ASR, EDS, and ESP (thankfully, you don't need that off-road ) also fail. And as soon as your ABS light comes on, there's probably an entry in the error memory. I know that you can disable the ABS in the control unit (ask Tuneline about it), but I have no idea how to turn it on or off.
Best regards,

@troubleshooter
You can't really compare my T4 Syncro to your Golf, because I'm just saying that I can go where you're already stuck .
Seriously, all the electronics are a hindrance in more demanding situations, especially ABS and EDS. But if I deactivate the ABS, the EDS shouldn't work either, since it relies on brake intervention and works with the ABS sensors.
The problem with ABS and EDS is simply that the brakes can get very hot, and in situations involving hard braking or steep inclines with ice and mud, the ABS can actually hinder progress.
I prefer to rely on solid technology as well. The T4 might not have much of it, but I'm trying to incorporate it.

So, is there definitely an error message if you pull the fuse?

I have to admit that you are a bit superior to me in terms of ground clearance .
The problem with ABS and EDS is simply that the brakes can get very hot, and in situations involving hard braking or steep inclines with ice and mud, the ABS can actually hinder progress.

That's probably correct. My brakes already overheat when I drive a bit faster on snow.
Regarding the error log, I'm reasonably sure that it always records two errors in my case (ABS sensor defect).
Right front wheel speed error.
ABS inactive.

@synchro peter:
Here's a completely different thought, considering we're already talking about accident reports. How does the ABS function work if the rear freewheel has been removed?
Wasn't that one of the reasons why ABS wasn't available on all-wheel-drive vehicles until much later?
If we're already discussing the legal implications of a tripped fuse, what about the situation where you have to perform a full stop at 150 km/h and the rear axle locks up because the ABS cannot regulate it due to the lack of a freewheel .
Just a thought from me... Gruß

@wolfi
I tried it once and made a mistake.
@roger
Valid point, but not a problem with the T4 Syncro.
The T4 Syncro isn't really a 'four-wheel drive' vehicle, to put it mildly. And while we're on the subject, true four-wheel drive vehicles don't have a freewheel. That's also not ideal for off-road driving.
The early Syncros had ABS systems without a freewheel. The freewheel was only introduced later, likely from model year 1997/98 onwards. For informational purposes, load-dependent braking force regulators were only available on Syncros without ABS, while a combination of systems was used in standard T4 models.
Why should my rear axle overtake me, especially considering that I thoroughly tested everything before modifying the car in this way? The ABS works perfectly, there are no error codes, and the light doesn't even come on when braking.
In case of doubt, even small differences in speed will be compensated for by the viscous coupling, so there are no problems on either side.

Depending on the type of ABS system installed, it might be sufficient to simply disconnect the hose from the...
Interrupt the brake light switch.
