Hi.
I have a Volkswagen Golf Mk3 with a 1.8-liter engine and 75 horsepower. The following error message is stored in the system:
00515 - Camshaft Position (Hall) Sensor (G40)
03-00 - No signal.

Could it be that the Hall sensor is defective? Or what else could the problem be?
Mgf Bolzer.

It could also mean that the engine is stalled. Then, after a few seconds, this error message appears. So, don't be confused by it!

It's a great thing because the machine won't run without the hall sensor signal anyway, since there is no substitute value.

'No, that's not correct. What you're saying is true for the 'engine speed sensor (G28)', but not for the 'Hall sensor (G40)'. The G40 is located on the camshaft, not the crankshaft, and it's only used to determine the relationship between the camshaft and the crankshaft. The engine would still run without the G40, but it might start a little slower and potentially not deliver full power.'

It's code G28 (not G40) that incorrectly displays an error when the fault memory is accessed, even though the engine doesn't move after the ignition is turned on. This typically only happens in older vehicles, roughly up to around 1995-1996.

Then we will probably have to wait for the engine code to clarify things further.

Uwe, please compare the construction period you specified with the construction period of the Volkswagen Golf 3.
Do you notice anything?

His old 75 horsepower engine most likely has the 'Mono-Motronic' system, and that system doesn't have a sensor for engine speed.

A motor management system without a sensor for engine speed? I can hardly imagine that, but if you're sure, I won't argue. The smallest engine in the Golf 3 on the US market was a 2.0 with 115 hp (MKB ABA), and it had a sensor for engine speed.icon_smile.gif

Sure, of course.

The 2.0 doesn't have a MONO-Motronic either!

His engine is either an AAM or an ANN, depending on the year of manufacture.

I also read the Hall sensor (G40) on a similar vehicle. However, the problem disappeared when starting the engine again.

No, that's not correct.

However, it's true. I've received several AAM codes, and this error message appears only when the ignition is turned ON (because the engine isn't running), but it's not a problem. If you don't get this error with the engine running, then there's nothing to worry about. icon_wink.gif

Hi,

even if it's not a diesel... icon_wink.gif

I also once had a problem with the speed sensors on the "camshaft". For a while, I was looking for the sensor, until I realized that it referred to the distributor. However, in this engine, the distributor is not located on the camshaft (like in "normal" engines), but at the end of the intermediate shaft (it's just an 827 icon_wink.gif).
In the Mono Motronic system, the Hall sensor from the distributor takes on the functions of both the speed sensor and the position encoder.
The diagnostic memory for these engines (1.6L and 1.8L with Mono Motronic) must always be read while the engine is running. This is stated in the VAG documentation, otherwise you will get the message "Hall sensor defective." However, the Mono Motronic system will not function without this component.

Hi.
Der Motorkennbuschstabe ist AAM. Der Fehler kommst immer wieder, sobald ich ihn aus dem Fehlerspeicher gelöscht habe. Der Motor ruckelt leicht, im Teillastbereich. Not very strong.
Best regards, Bolzer.

Hello Bolzer,

Please check the fuel pump relay and the temperature sensor.

Greetings.

Mati.

Sincerely, Bolzer

Was that while the engine was off or running?

Hi.
I need to double-check this to see if the error occurs while driving. Since it's not my car, I'll have it back on Saturday.

Best regards, Bolzer.
