At 120,000 km, the timing belt needs to be replaced. If you've already done that, it might be enough to just replace the belt without the pulleys. The water pump and thermostat are a bit of a gamble; they might last until 240,000 km, or they might not. If they don't, you'll have to take everything apart again. Usually, the water pump and thermostat are replaced at the same time, and for the price (around €70 + €25), it's probably not a bad idea, unless you get a new thermostat that's defective, in which case you're in trouble.

I remember that when the belt was changed 40,000 km ago, the water pump was also replaced, but not the thermostat or anything else.

If the workshop replaces the camshafts, they will tell you what other parts need to be replaced as well, because they offer a 24-month warranty on the work they perform. That's why I always have it done at a VAG dealership rather than an independent garage. Make sure you are adequately protected so that you don't have to pay for any consequential damage from the camshafts. Have them perform an oil change immediately after the replacement, and then another oil change after 5,000 - 10,000 km (it doesn't have to be long-life oil). There's a lot of metal debris from the camshafts in the engine, and it's important to remove as much of it as possible. Read other posts on the topic of 'camshafts' or 'AFB', 'AKN'. Also, check the A4 forum at www.a4-freunde.de. I've posted all my experiences there.
Please also replace the crankcase ventilation system if you still have the original one installed.
The cylinder head covers will be replaced anyway, because the seals around the injectors are not available individually.

I'll inquire and get a quote. Thanks for the tips.

Regards,
Felix.

Update:

I removed both heads last week and replaced the internal components.

That's how I gained new insights.

As I mentioned earlier, some of the camshaft lobes have pitting. The hydraulic lifters were also damaged, or rather, softened, specifically at these lobes. This means that after a period of no load, the pressure between the camshaft and the rocker arm builds up very abruptly, which then leads to high stresses beneath the surface and the cracks mentioned.
The cause of pitting is therefore the hydrogen, which leads to increased stress on the northwest region.

Similar to what happened with Mr. Antje, my delivery also included soft expansion joints. Due to the amount of work involved, I didn't attempt to see if they could be purged of air and thus regenerated during operation.

I will take the opportunity to open up some components and investigate the cause.

The lubrication of the NW (presumably a machine component) is achieved through the hydros (large bore) and the rocker arms (small bore). Typically, more oil is used than necessary.

"Some of the ball bearings in my Hydros were quite worn. While there was plenty of oil present due to the hydrostatic lubrication, the relative velocity was insufficient for effective hydrodynamic lubrication."

What is possible, but which my engine cannot demonstrate, is that the resulting wear could clog the injection nozzle, thereby causing the already somewhat soft camshaft to wear out.

I was unable to prove or disprove whether the pitting could transform into uniform wear with increasing mileage.

I wouldn't completely rule out the oil either. It would also be interesting to know how many vehicles with damage to the camshafts had modifications (tuning) done. If the oil temperature rises significantly, the oil film becomes unstable and, in the worst case, breaks down. This is a major disadvantage of LL2 oils, so it's a possibility. Furthermore, these models are often used as company cars, and they are rarely treated gently, which likely contributes to the wear and tear.

Hello,
I once heard that there were "hardening defects."

Hello everyone,

I myself drive a V6 TDI engine from the Volkswagen group.
In February of this year, I heard a strange ticking sound coming from the right cylinder bank.
I initially suspected the vacuum pump, as there were no signs of power loss or an uneven idle when the engine was cold.

The next day, I was enlightened.
The camshafts were all worn out.
In some cases, several cams had sunk in by more than 1.5mm icon_evil.gif.

I then had the camshafts, lifters, hydraulic lifters, timing belt, water pump, and everything else that goes with it replaced, and while I was at it, I also had the 'longlife' service interval reset.
Since then, I've been using Castrol RS 10W60 oil and changing it every 15,000 km.
It should be noted that, despite having 215,000 km on the odometer, the engine no longer requires any oil changes after 15,000 km and runs much more smoothly.

Anyway, I, along with several other 'affected' individuals, took legal action against VW after my lawyer received an expert opinion from some federal office for material testing (or research...), which stated that the material used in the camshaft and lifters in this engine could not even remotely withstand the stresses it was subjected to.
Oh yeah, of course, I had to send my parts there beforehand, and I'm not getting them back either.

The lawsuit was dismissed... !!!! icon_evil.gif icon_evil.gif
Why... -> No reason given...!!!
Estimate ---> It's still being subsidized by the government somewhere... Thanks, Germany!!!

It definitely isn't due to the oil, tuning, or anything else that the parts are breaking in.
They simply cut corners by using cheap materials!

Unfortunately, I have been instructed not to forward this report on the inspected components to any third parties.

Best regards,

Marcus.

This is certainly an interesting post. It sounds sad, but it reflects Volkswagen's cost-cutting policies. It just reminds me of my Passat's front axle. It had to be replaced twice, and now it's broken again icon_evil.gif.

Hello R.M.

'I only had to replace the front axle bearings on my Passat (4Motion) at 210,000 km... strangely, when you hear from other people, it seems like it often needs to be done at much lower mileage.'

I purchased the complete Meyle kit in HD quality.
Let's see how long this lasts.

Regards,
Marcus.

Hello!

Zumstay with me...

Best regards!

Who issued that order, especially since there was no trial? Surely you had to pay for the report?

Bye.

Hello pax,

I received a 'warning' from V.... because I stated in the courthouse, 'I will not let this go, and I will forward all expert opinions and findings to the press so that those responsible will be forced to leave their offices permanently, no matter how many people are involved and lose their jobs!'

Well, that was probably said a little too loudly. A few days later, I received a warning letter.

By the way, my legal insurance covered the cost of the expert opinion.
I had to send the report to V..... and provide a sworn statement confirming that I no longer have a copy of it.

That's what it looks like. I don't find it funny.
And I certainly won't do anything more to oppose it, because they definitely have more power.

Best regards,

Richtig. EiHow rude!

If I were you, that would be my last VW. I'm also considering getting rid of mine because of the axle issue. Also, I would have contacted a car magazine anonymously, suggesting they "take a closer look at the material used in the NW [likely referring to a specific part or component]." Admittedly, I don't like to back down, especially when I know I'm right...

Best regards!

Hello R.M.,

Yes, I understand what you mean; I also don't like losing very much.
My lawyer, in any case, gave me the good advice to not say anything more.
otherwise, it can become expensive.

But V... definitely managed to lose a customer again.
That's me!
'German quality craftsmanship??? I don't care!!!'
It's said that V.... will eventually go bankrupt... I won't care.
Such a corporation, like many others, should be abolished. icon_evil.gif

Since I've invested a lot of money in the Passat this year,
He still has to hold on.

After that, it will either be a Volvo V70 with the good 5-cylinder diesel engine, or the only truly good engine ever made by Audi.
Or I might get a Toyota... The new RAV4 is a nice car.

For €36,000, you can get a brand new RAV4, diesel (177 hp), with a manual transmission and full equipment.

Best regards,

Marcus.
