Loosen the oil filter slightly – something needs to get into the other oil spray nozzles.

I had the lid of the filter housing open. Or does the entire unit, including the oil cooler, need to be detached from the engine?

Best regards,
Stefan

No, not necessarily; normally, something should be going in or out. Is nothing going in or out of the other oil seals either? If it's only one, then that's the reason for the holed piston icon_wink.gif.

No, nothing is going in or out of cylinder 3 either.
That really surprised me.

And how about the other cylinders, or does this only apply to those two?

I only tested it on cylinders 3 and 4. Cylinder 4 was already removed.
I tested the 3er as a control.
You can't reach it from below because the crankshaft is still installed.
How does the oil channel run to the oil nozzles? Is the piston bottom permanently lubricated?
injected continuously or only with short bursts?
Perhaps the problem lies in the fact that there's still a kind of 'distributor' in the middle.

'Hi everyone, I've been following this topic and I'm familiar with these issues from the early days of the pump-nozzle generation. It's a problem with the crankcase ventilation system. The membrane sometimes sticks, and oil accumulates on it. At high engine speeds, this causes a sudden opening, and the engine sucks in a shot-glass-sized amount of oil, which can cause it to run uncontrollably. In this case, you need to replace the ventilation cap and possibly overhaul the engine. Believe me, I've been working on these engines for over 10 years.'

Best regards from the far north.

Believe me, I've known this engine for over 10 years.

hihi, how does that work? The AJM wasn't even released until the end of 98 icon_lol.gif.

Just kidding,

and therefore, the engine sucks in an oil amount equivalent to a shot glass and becomes a self-runner,

'Doesn't this amount of oil distribute itself within the intercooler system and get fed to the engine 'gradually'? After all, the intercooler has a large internal surface area that can temporarily hold a certain amount of oil on its surface... I've seen engines where oil leaked out of the intercooler hoses after being modified (!) and they still ran normally.'

However, I am also aware of a case of an AFN engine where the piston looked the same; however, this AFN engine was no longer in its original configuration (0.216 size, GT1749VA, etc.), and it cannot be ruled out that the piston in the AFN engine failed due to overheating icon_wink.gif.

Okay, I looked at the spray nozzles again today.
After loosening the oil pump slightly, I was able to...
Blow out the nozzles.
I'll start assembling it this weekend.

Best regards,
Stefan

Were they clogged? If so, what kind of oil were you using?

No, I don't think they were clogged. I'm not sure if...
There's something stuck in the oil pump (possibly a check valve...) that I've been trying to dislodge.
After I loosened the pump a bit, it started working.
You really have to press down firmly on the syringe to get it to make a hissing/gurgling sound.
to be heard.
I use oil from Li*** Mol*, specifically the Diesel HiTech for PD engines (exact designation: ...).
(I might need to double-check that). The oil has the VW approval for PD injectors.

Best regards,
Stefan

Okay, so the engine has been reassembled with a new piston and is ready.
Successfully completed the first test run icon_smile.gif.
The PD element of the faulty cylinder will still be replaced.

I saw this damage three months ago on an old 1Z engine that a friend of mine was repairing. The engine had also been driven for less than 200,000 kilometers.

Since no plausible cause for the damage was found at the time, a clogged crankcase ventilation valve has now been replaced as part of the inspection.

@ tdi pump nozzle --- Thank you for the tip.

Doesn't this amount of oil distribute itself within the charge air system and get fed to the engine 'slowly'? After all, the intercooler has a large internal surface area that can temporarily hold a certain amount of oil on its surface.

CORRECTION: The amount of oil can hardly be contained on the surface (keyword: flow rate), especially if you calculate how much air a 1.9-liter engine sucks in at a speed of 2500 rpm (average operating speed, assumption), and if there is also turbo boost. I had underestimated that somewhat icon_redface.gif.

The intercooler ducts are already internally coated with oil, so they will hardly be able to contain any oil spillage.

By the way, I knew about the TDI pump-injector system, specifically the AJM, icon_eek.gif (pn) even before it was released on the market.

I also have a picture of something similar. This is the third piston from my 1Z/AHU engine.
I drove a car that had a chip installed, and the mileage already showed 300,000 kilometers.
So far, most people have thought it was a faulty nozzle.

Yeah, it seems like it's always the same story.

It would be interesting to know under what load conditions – whether it was during city driving, country road driving, or highway driving – the piston failed.

The "1Z" I was talking about occurred while I was driving at full speed on the highway.
