Hello again.

The 'swirl intake port' in this engine has only one purpose: to improve the swirl of the intake air at partial load, so that the fuel mixes better with the air. Therefore, an intake channel from each cylinder is closed off in the partial load circuit.
I'll try to upload a picture sometime to make it clearer. This 'shift intake manifold' has nothing to do with torque or any of that stuff; it just helps achieve better exhaust values in the partial load range.

I would personally never use the term "switchable intake manifold" when referring to a diesel engine, as it makes me think of the well-known, switchable resonance intake manifold used in gasoline engines, which regulates or adjusts the effective intake length of the intake pipe.
That has absolutely nothing to do with the diesel intake manifold here (which also provides some kind of "switching").

In diesel engines, a typical design feature is the shutdown or throttling of the filling channel in a 4-valve cylinder head. This creates a higher swirl in the combustion chamber due to the increased flow through the tangential channel.

The mechanism of the "Drall" level has already been correctly described in the previous posts.

It's interesting that the VW solution apparently only has two switch positions: "ON" and "OFF." Based on the simple control using a vacuum actuator and electronic pressure regulator (similar to a shut-off valve), I would speculate that...
Dieselmartin, can you confirm this? Or does the valve also adjust to intermediate positions during engine operation?

I also suspect it's only "on or off" because the vacuum sensor is the same one used for the shut-off valve on VP37 TDIs. Furthermore, the solenoid valve for it is "Made in USA," and that probably means it can only be either "fully engaged" or "not working at all." icon_twisted.gif

This is the same behavior as seen in the twin-port engines used by Opel.
These are gasoline engines that increase torque in the lower RPM range due to the deactivated second intake port.
At high engine speeds, the second channel is opened to allow maximum air mass into the combustion chambers.

If the valves weren't positioned in the intake port, the swirl of the incoming air mass would be lower, and it wouldn't be possible to burn as much fuel cleanly. This results in a decrease in torque.
