Hi,

off topic:

Quote:
Not at all online. The KBA (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt - Federal Motor Transport Authority) already takes care of that. Even publicly available copies are strictly penalized.

As far as I'm concerned, they can charge money for it, so that it's not flooded with frivolous requests. But why should online distribution be penalized? It was created with our tax money, and therefore belongs to every citizen. The state exists for the people, not the people for the state. icon_twisted.gif

Hmmm, regardless of the STVZO regulations... who actually checks that so strictly? Not even the TÜV! I confirm that Japanese, French, and Italian models often don't have brake lights on when the ignition is off! I don't see any danger; when towing, the hazard lights are always on anyway!
I think it's bad that some people modify their vehicles to have the icon_eek.gif parking light in red. icon_evil.gif Imagine if someone was coming towards you with a red parking light. icon_cool.gif Or the trucks with numerous Christmas tree lights, Mercedes stars, V-lighting, yellow lights in the front, 6 brake lights, etc. icon_cool.gif That's what I mean by these differences! By the way, my Bulli had the brake light rewired to the ignition during the TDI conversion, and there were no problems with it at the TÜV (technical inspection). } I'm happy for Ulf.

I agree. It's simply not acceptable to equate regulations that were developed using taxpayer money and which apply to us as well, with works created by an artist who relies solely on their art for income.

I wonder when we'll reach the point where you can only access the Basic Law [Germany's constitution] for a high fee...

Nothing against a small fee to cover the costs of publishing such works in print, but those costs are minimal, especially in the age of online publishing.

Not online at all. The KBA (German Federal Motor Transport Authority) makes sure of that. Even publicly released copies are strictly penalized. After all, they make a lot of money from it. Moreover, you shouldn't make it any easier for potential car manufacturers to build a car. icon_evil.gif

Hmm, it would be interesting to see how they react if you present them with this.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

"BTT:"
I once roughly measured the maximum possible current load for class 15 with the motor stationary.

Windshield washer pump: approximately 5.7 A.
Reverse lights: approximately 3 A.
Blower motor control: approximately 0.25 A.
AI (Artificial Intelligence) along with various STG (System Test Generator) activation currents: approximately 0.8 A.

Overall, it's approximately close to 10 amps from the factory.

I've now connected the reversing lights on my Polo to the X-load relay, and I've connected the brake lights from the constant plus terminal to terminal 15.
The net additional load on terminal 15 is now caused by the third brake light, which has 15 bulbs at 2.3 watts each, resulting in a load of approximately 2.6 amps.
icon_arrow.gif As long as I refrain from activating the windshield washer pump while braking, my terminal 15 should not be at risk...

Okay, I managed to reduce the 2.6 A overload to 0.3 A by modifying the third brake light to use 60 LEDs. I had already been annoyed by the poor accessibility for replacing the light bulb (requiring the removal of all the interior panels of the tailgate icon_evil.gif), and now the aspect of power consumption has also become an issue.
The LEDs in the auxiliary brake light provide a similar brightness on a gray garage door as a 21W bulb in the main brake lights, although the color of the light from the main brake lights is not as red as the LEDs, but rather appears as a pale, muted orange icon_confused.gif.

Interestingly, my partner's 2001 Ibiza shows the same light color on all 3 brake lights, even though the 3rd brake light is most likely an LED part from the factory icon_eek.gif.
Should they have used white LEDs back then? And since when has this technology been produced in large quantities?

Just now, I noticed something "dramatic" in a shop window behind a Polo: how slowly the 21W bulbs in the main brake lights illuminate compared to the LEDs. I estimate the delay to be about 0.5 seconds, which is time lost for the driver behind to react if the car in front of them has incandescent brake lights and suddenly brakes!
Therefore, LED brake lights are indeed a safety improvement against rear-end collisions, especially in today's fast-paced driving environment. That's why I'm also going to replace the 21W bulbs in the headlights with LED bulbs – to immediately provide the ubiquitous tailgaters with the full dose of photons when braking, instead of just showing a red line initially, and then "eventually" displaying the familiar three-red-light pattern as a brake warning.
F*** the legality, my health (and my Polo) are more important to me icon_twisted.gif.

Hi,

Even the red LEDs come in different wavelengths of light, and they generally match the color of the original LED taillights quite well. I also tested these LEDs with a brightness of 15000 mcd at the time, and they are more of an intense wine red compared to the standard red color.

White LEDs appeared shortly after blue LEDs. A white LED is essentially a blue LED with a yellow phosphor coating on the chip. This coating converts the short light wavelengths into longer wavelengths, along with the remaining blue light, resulting in a white appearance.

However, the Ibiza model definitely uses red LEDs with a shorter wavelength, and using too many filters will significantly reduce the brightness.

"But generally speaking, I got tired of changing light bulbs (my car is a real light bulb guzzler, and even with full multiplexing, there's no indication of faulty bulbs...). So, a while ago, I switched to complete LED taillight assemblies. There are even some that look very similar to the originals, basically everything except the black and chrome parts. The price is also reasonable. Especially with the brake lights, I wouldn't want to experiment with DIY solutions, because at the end of the day, someone might rear-end you because they got 'startled' by the brightness or the response time... Then you've saved nothing, and you'll have expert witness fees to pay."

In short, use proper LED lamps, and that's it. The selection is very large, and unlike the original ones, heavier LEDs won't make your "blue motion" any different. icon_wink.gif

Hi,

However, it should be mentioned, at least as a word of caution, that the approval certificate (ABE) for the lights is only valid when used with the specifically intended light bulbs. Therefore, while such a modification might be appealing, it's not really legal.

Ibiza: Are you sure that the third brake light is an LED lamp? I should take a closer look... you don't often find yourself driving behind your own car and braking.

It's possible that... something was mentioned in the instructions about "lamp replacement not possible/necessary."

Best regards,

Jan.

Hi Jan,

Christel's Ibi also displays the "anticipatory" behavior of the additional brake light when braking: due to a "color riddle" with the lights, we checked it specifically today. Therefore, there is a 99% chance that LEDs are actually used in the upper lights.
EDIT 11/24: I just measured the power consumption of the additional brake light ("solo"): 0.3 A for 24 bulbs would result in 0.15 watts per bulb -> far too little for the brightness and beam angle.
This also confirms that the third brake light is equipped with LEDs.

48€ für zwei Birnen ohne ABE? Wow!

"I would have preferred to spend a little more and bought complete LED tail lights. With those, bulbs never burn out, and the operating permit doesn't expire."

If someone cuts you off in traffic and they have even the slightest bit of awareness, they'll claim there were no brake lights on and then you're left looking like a fool.

Okay, to each their own toys.

Regards,
Guste, whose lighting is also no longer approved (although it's for the front).

Light bulbs can also burn out unnoticed...
Apparently, experts should be able to determine whether a light bulb was crushed while "on" or "off."

Comparing Guste to something you haven't even seen is a bit of a stretch, but practically speaking, it doesn't really matter. Even if they light up, the insurance coverage is void, and no matter what kind of lawsuit you file, you're the one who ends up bearing the cost because the BE (presumably a component or system) is simply broken.

For lamps that have undergone type approval testing, the situation is different. If the approval certificate is missing, it may be checked whether the lamps function or functioned correctly (in which case, without the approval certificate, the approval would be invalid). In such cases, the damage is typically covered by the insurance company of the other party involved, and the injured person may be referred to an ophthalmologist.

If the original appearance is important to you (which it was for me), as mentioned before, there is now a wide range of LED lights that look very similar to the original ones. Otherwise, I wouldn't see any advantage in saving 50-100€ and not having insurance. icon_rolleyes.gif

"I'm not sure what it is... the other day, something like that was in front of me at an intersection. It looked very flashy and the LEDs were so bright, they almost blinded you. I doubt it had the required approval (ABE), so that probably won't help you either."

"However, I'm increasingly skeptical about LED headlights, at least the ones you encounter in everyday traffic in Berlin (both original equipment and aftermarket, and probably also illegal ones). It's absolutely understandable that they need to be very bright during an emergency braking situation on a lonely country road, but when one of those things is stopped at a traffic light two meters in front of me, and the driver has their foot on the brake the whole time, it's sometimes really unpleasantly blinding. Ultimately, that can't be the intended purpose... perhaps the developers should consider adapting the often-existing dynamic control, which already adjusts based on brake pedal activity, to these kinds of situations as well."

Jan.
