I always describe the smell of hot coolant as Maggi (= a seasoning broth).
Of course, it will also smell like that with the expansion tank open (engine warm).
Bitte gib den Text an, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.
I'm just wondering if someone might also perceive this smell as burnt wood icon_eek.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif.

So, charcoal has a rather pungent smell. The coolant should smell disgustingly sweet.

Hi Bertil,

Okay, we could still agree on using something sweet-smelling instead of Maggi (for the normal coolant smell) icon_wink.gif.

Have you ever compared the smell to other cars to see if the wood smell might be normal and just something you haven't noticed before?

Okay, I was fine with the Maggi, but the sweetness comes from the glycol that various winemakers added to the wine in the mid-1980s. About 18 years ago, during an engine replacement, I accidentally swallowed some of that stuff – let me tell you, it was disgusting.

So, the Lupo smells sweet, the Golf that my father has also smells the same, and the Jetta does too.

Small update!

I just came back from being nice.
This afternoon, I took a quick look inside the coolant reservoir, and what do you know: icon_eek.gif FLOATABLE PARTICLES! They definitely weren't there yesterday!
Okay, so I went to the workshop, and I'm still getting shrugs. "... where am I supposed to look for the problem...? no coolant consumption and no other anomalies..." icon_twisted.gif Great, I'm really going to ruin the engine. So, the smell of exhaust coming from the coolant reservoir and foreign substances in it, that's just a shot in the dark! Apparently, no one in the HI TEC world wants to acknowledge that something like this can happen! icon_evil.gif
Okay, tomorrow there's the next development: On the way home, the car started sputtering, so I'm curious to see what they'll come up with next. icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi Bertil,

What did the suspended particles look like, and what was their consistency?

They still look good.

Here is the full resolution of the image (cropped)

I would describe the consistency as oily. It sticks immediately to the wattles, can be crushed easily between the fingers without resistance (no sand), and feels like hand cream.

In my opinion, that's engine oil.http://mitglied.lycos.de/kraftbertil/Bilder/Schwebst_2.JPG{MARKER}

Hello Bertil,

Then your initial suspicion is confirmed: the timing chain tensioner is broken.

Hi Bertil,

That's unbelievable icon_evil.gif. Your engine hasn't even had that many kilometers on it yet... I hope they show some understanding. I'm curious how the cylinder head bolts are tightened at the factory icon_question.gif. If some idiot had a bad day, you're the one who suffers. Perhaps we can demonstrate something about the loosening moment of the ZK screws icon_question.gif icon_twisted.gif.

Best regards, Christian.

Hi Bertil,

You have a warranty, so don't worry.
Currently, it would only cost VAG a penny to fix the issue, but soon it will cost a whole engine - it's up to them.

@bertil

It seems you've definitely gotten a real Monday car! icon_evil.gif

I'm considering buying a Passat TDI 130hp, possibly with 4Motion, as a nearly new car from a VW employee. icon_rolleyes.gif However, after reading all of this and seeing the experiences of friends with new or almost new VWs, I'm going to abandon the idea! The problems with my current 1Z seem insignificant compared to that.

'He's a machine. Either the screws are tightened by individual motors or via group gearboxes. It's highly unlikely that the problem lies with you.'

What we've had so far are simply faulty seals. Whenever a human being is involved in handling this kind of material, imperfections are bound to creep in.

The screws are tightened by machines. If errors occur there, then they affect an entire production run. icon_sad.gif

Apparently, they have no interest in fixing the error.
I just left my car at the repair shop, and the mechanic insists that a blown head gasket *must* cause the engine to consume coolant. A colleague of mine has a different idea: a crack in the cylinder head or engine block that closes when the engine is cold. In that case, there would be no coolant loss, but when the engine is warm and under combustion pressure, exhaust gases (and now also oil) would be forced into the coolant. Then it's probably time for a head, or even a whole block!
Wait and drink tea. icon_smile.gif

@bertil

It's truly shocking. But it all fits the image I have of various VW workshops. Textbook examples of incompetence! I just hope that the mechanics find the error soon and fix it properly! As I said, the emphasis is on 'properly'! As I know from various workshops, they often just tinker around and look for workarounds, just to avoid having to deal with the problem properly! icon_evil.gif
but knowing you, I'm sure you'll handle it perfectly! icon_cool.gif

'And with the new one, I'm going to hold off for now! I'm not a huge fan of PD engines, and I don't want to spend any more time than necessary in an incompetent VW workshop if there are any problems – I'd rather not spend more time in the workshop than in my car! I'll keep an eye out for a well-maintained or barely-used 1Z engine for the worst-case scenario. That will keep me going for a while. In terms of the suspension, I've replaced pretty much everything in the past few weeks and months, so hopefully, everything is stable now. And the bodywork is still in excellent condition!'

Okay, until the TÜV (technical inspection authority) rejects us!

Hi,

And another update:

I'm still laughing so hard my stomach hurts.

The ZKD (cylinder head gasket) has now been replaced, at my request (which I never actually expressed). After the test drive, the expansion tank broke. icon_question.gif icon_exclaim.gif In the new expansion tank, there was suddenly black sludge again (according to the "workshop," this is not oil!). After you had flushed the cooling system three times, there was still black liquid in the expansion tank (which is strange or...). icon_biggrin.gif

Now, they want to flush the cooling system again tomorrow to remove the black sludge.

I'm starting to suspect that this work is pointless because either my head or the software has a problem.

Okay, let's move on to the third act icon_smile.gif until tomorrow.

Please don't laugh, I'm looking for a 1Z engine. Ideally, it should be as cheap as possible and have some defects so I can rebuild it. I actually prefer a low-tech engine like that! Since I'm not in a hurry, I think it will be ready sometime this summer.

Yippie icon_lol.gif The 1Z icon_lol.gif along with the AFN and TD, is the best thing they've ever built icon_eek.gif.
