Are you talking about polishing or painting?

"The local" wanted 500 double marks for the painting, because they said they had to apply filler and paint all the way to the top, blah blah blah.

I just taped it off and tried not to apply too much pressure to the adhesive strips.
It eventually turned blue icon_smile.gif.

Neither VW nor "the local" were willing to agree to skip the dent removal and body filler work and simply apply a "blue" (paint) finish.
"The dent is approximately 3x5cm in size and about 4mm deep, and while the customer requested it, I don't entirely understand why."

Only for polishing and finishing. icon_wink.gif

I can understand why they refused to let her get a "butt lift" procedure. On the one hand, they also have to guarantee this work, but on the other hand, it's not good advertising if you tell people that they messed up the job.

Regarding the masking tape: I use wide painter's tape for masking. I only apply it halfway, and fold the other half up at approximately a right angle, so that the adhesive side faces the surface to be painted. By folding the painter's tape up at approximately a right angle, you avoid overspray and also prevent a hard edge from forming between the old paint and your newly applied layer. And that's precisely what makes polishing, blending, and sealing the transition zone much easier afterward.

I then also came up with the idea of folding it icon_smile.gif afterwards.

It's not that bad, though, because it disappears again just 2 days after washing, as the area gets dirty quickly.

Do you ever actually create an image? Why did you even need to get involved in that? I mean, what was the cause of the damage?

The cause was a tectonic plate shift, which meant that our gate, which leads to the driveway, suddenly jutted into the path of my wife's approaching car.
The Golf then hit the gate with the short section between the tailgate and the wheel, causing it to be slightly dented. However, only the top two layers of the paint were lost (the clear coat and the metallic layer).

I've been looking at it for almost a year now, and when I was recently spending more time near my parents' garage (where the heating is!), I finally took out the can.

I couldn't find any "before" pictures of the damage.
"After" pictures are possible - you can still see the scratches because of their depth.

Too much work.
I had specifically bought some ink cartridges, but I was initially satisfied with just "plain blue."

And since I now know how everything should be done correctly, I can always do it again icon_smile.gif.

I now see it very much from a business perspective.

The goal was to get rid of the white scratches, and I achieved that.
Since the Golf already had enough other quirks, the effort required for this particular issue was just right.

I don't think it's really necessary to repaint the side panel extensively, especially since the bumper has several areas where the paint is just a thin layer applied with a paint pen, and there are also some dull spots on the surface caused by sunscreen.
Apart from the numerous scratches from fingernails, boots, and other foreign objects icon_evil.gif.

Due to daily use, the car gets dirty and dusty again within 24 hours after each wash, making it impossible to even see the edges of the newly applied paint.

Filling in scratches is pointless if the dent remains.
And the professionals said the dent was too deep to simply be filled with putty.

So, the goal was: "Just make it blue, and that's good enough."

Okay. If the requirements are so low, then probably even a single brushstroke with roof paint would have been sufficient... icon_rolleyes.gif

...if you had sourced that blue stuff, it would certainly have been like that... I see it the same way as Martin: when it comes to certain residual vehicle values and usage conditions, corrosion protection is important; if you need a certain look, buy something new icon_smile.gif.

BTW:

While the Golf was away being painted, the Passat was hit by a vehicle that ran into the exhaust pipe and rear bumper, and it also received additional scratches in the driver's door handle recess. icon_evil.gif

Therefore, there's always something to do, which minimizes downtime.
