Hello!
Conclusion: Were the "Potis" to blame?
Did I understand that correctly?
Best regards.

26-12-2016, 13:25 Subject: Lupo 3L: No Gear Shift? Troubleshooting Guide |

|
Even though many of the forum readers probably already know this, here's a "simple" explanation of what a preliminary review might involve:
On my VW Lupo 3L (manufactured in 1999), the following problem occurred (especially in cold weather):
- Unexpected "refusal to shift gears," whether caused by automatic transmission shift points or manual gear changes. Coming to a stop, turning off the engine, and restarting only provides temporary relief.
Diagnosis:
- Hydraulic oil reservoir completely empty (when viewed in a manner not compliant with regulations, and in a state where the hydraulic oil pressure circuit is not relaxed).
- The hydraulic oil pump runs for long periods and frequently.
Therapy 1:
- Topped up the hydraulic fluid (approximately 150 ml) – must be VW-compliant – and the error has not reappeared.
Therapy 2:
- Replacement of the hydraulic oil pressure reservoir (a nearly spherical container in the hydraulic unit, part number 6N0142433).
After several years of operation, it is designed to lose some of its air, which will increase its hydraulic oil capacity, but at the same time reduce its ability to compensate for volume fluctuations.
--> After replacing the reservoir (in my case, by the workshop), the error no longer appeared, and the hydraulic oil pump only ran less frequently and for shorter durations.
--> When experiencing problems with the gear shifting, first check the hydraulic oil level and the functionality of the hydraulic oil pressure reservoir. It's a simple check that often helps!

Hello,
Therefore, it's advisable to always carry a bottle of hydraulic oil and a 24mm wrench when working on a 3L engine. This allows you to at least temporarily fix a breakdown caused by a lack of oil in the clutch actuator while on the road.
It is important to identify and eliminate the cause of the oil leak. Typically, the seal of the lower gear selector pan becomes permeable, or the secure and tight connection of the hydraulic lines to the gear selector is no longer guaranteed.
Bye.
