Hi Rainer,

I had it replaced in December at my 1Z dealership. The original parts were reinstalled. Until my change at the end of March, I drove about 8000 km with that part. My fuel consumption decreased by approximately 0.3 liters per 100km. Also, the exhaust smelled like violets again!

It's been a while, but I can agree with Jörg's observations. The amount of soot being emitted has also decreased somewhat.

Unfortunately, one of the nozzles was also leaking on mine. So it was definitely defective!

'Forgot something else:'

I didn't switch voluntarily either. During the glow plug check, I had two wet glow plugs. I removed them and saw diesel fuel leaking out of both.
Since the change, I have to say that the machine runs harder. As mentioned in another thread, I've already tried everything! Nothing has helped. I've just learned to live with it. But I'll try Ulf's latest tip if my dad ever lets me drive my old car again! By the way, my dad is now driving the car with significantly less than 5 liters (4.7 liters exactly!).

A question for those who have already done the nozzle swap and driven some kilometers with it:

How has the fuel consumption changed (city driving/countryside driving)? Do you notice any differences with the same driving style?

Hi Rainer,

Next week, there's a scheduled fuel stop with the experimental AFN (Advanced Fuel Nozzle), and then I can share some information about it.

According to the fuel gauge, the consumption should hardly have changed.

After adjusting the pump timing (delaying the injection start due to a higher opening pressure) towards an earlier setting, the overall starting behavior is now back to normal.

Hello everyone.

Did any of you happen to notice unusually high negative values in the idle speed control for the relevant cylinders?

I can't say for sure because at that time, VCDS (formerly known as Vag-Com) wasn't yet connected to my 1Z vehicle.

yes and no! icon_confused.gif

The value of the faulty nozzle was exactly 0, while all other nozzles were within their tolerance range (and even clustered closely together). After replacing it, all values were very close to 0.

Certainly not conspicuously high security.

Hi Bertil.

I recently saw VP 37 nozzles up close as well... but what in your photos "proves" that one of the nozzles is defective? icon_eek.gif icon_question.gif

The soot deposits were present on the front part of all four nozzles that came from the AFN (air fuel nozzle), but they were relatively dry and not as heavily encrusted.
But even your "perfect" nozzle is shiny at the front, as if it were wet...

There is no deposit on the intact nozzle, only a thin layer of soot. The defective nozzle has a thick, clumpy "gunk" on it. Furthermore, the nozzle even dripped after some time, even without any pressure being applied.

But even your "clean" nozzle shines at the front, as if it were wet.

Unfortunately, the flash makes it look worse than it is, but the undamaged nozzle is completely dry. The metal on this nozzle is reflective.

'These images were exactly what I saw! A thin layer of soot on a functioning nozzle is perfectly normal!'
