I would also check the junkyards. The probability of finding one seems very low. I looked in our three VWs: a Golf 3 Variant from 1995 with the basic 'Aldi' equipment, my Passat 35i GT from 1994, and my dad's company T4 TDI with the 'construction worker' equipment from 1995. It was installed in all of those vehicles. My old Golf 3 from 1992 with a TD engine also had it... So, I would save myself the 30€... icon_wink.gif

Hi Bertil,

I certainly didn't come up with that idea...

I was just at ATU, and they said they used to carry those items, but they are no longer in stock. They didn't have a current price, so I'm not going to call all the Berlin stores to see if there are any remaining stocks anywhere.

Therefore, thank you very much for the link to e-Bucht - one of the relays is now mine icon_wink.gif.

By the way, the 30 euros I mentioned earlier is the VW price. The 16.50 (including shipping) is actually quite a good deal in comparison.

@X-World/DocSnyder: You're right about the scrap, but as I said... the time is more of a problem, especially since I would first have to find a suitable piece of scrap metal...

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello everyone,

for the sake of completeness:

The relay arrived by mail today, and I immediately installed it (well, more like "inserted" it; "installed" is a bit of an exaggeration). It works perfectly and exactly as I expected.

99er relays are compatible with the 02 Ibiza 6K.

Thank you again to everyone who helped here!

Best regards,

Jan.

Post18-07-2004, 12:43    Subject: A3 8L, manufactured 04/97, wiper/washer relay with variable interval function Quote

I'm facing a similar problem, but this time it's with an Audi A3 8L manufactured in April 1997. Can I use this relay for that car as well?

Currently, a relay with the number 379 (part number: 8L0 955 531A) is installed. Since this device doesn't have a variable interval duration, I would like to exchange it for a corresponding relay.

At www.elv.de, there is a car wiper interval relay called ELV WI 95 (article number: 68-199-46), but I'm not sure if I can use it. Can anyone help me with this?

Hi Jens,

My modified relay has the part number 6K0 955 531, so it's almost the same as yours, except for the first letters (the vehicle code) and the "A" that follows.

When I compare this thing with the picture of the part you mentioned, at least the mechanical dimensions of the connector (i.e., the type and arrangement of the pins) match. Given the current policy of using identical parts, I consider it very likely that it will fit for you.

"Could you take out your relay and compare the contact side with the image on the ELV website?" It's not a guarantee, but it's quite likely.

Alternatively, you can buy it on eBay; those items pop up there from time to time.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello,
Okay, I've already found some. I wanted to compare them, but it's not that easy with the A3 because you have to remove the entire trim under the steering wheel. I'll try to buy one and then see how it works. I hope I'll have some time now and won't need to use the windshield wipers so often...

Hello,
Today, I borrowed and installed a relay, number 99, from a Golf 3. 'With the following result: as soon as I turn the ignition on, the windshield wipers start running on level 1, regardless of what I select on the steering column switch. They keep running and running until I turn the ignition off again.'

The pin assignments are identical; only 2 pins are labeled differently.

I guess I'll just have to live with it...

Hi,

or you can create an adapter that maps your wiring to the "standard" configuration.

Best regards,

Relay number 99.

And that's the original relay, number 379.

Could someone possibly send me a picture of the terminals of the relay with the number 19? Which can be exchanged for a 99.

I think that because the two relays have different contact designations, the control signals might also need to be different.

Jan?
How is the steering column lever designed on your vehicle?
I have:
Tap and hold, then swipe down.
up, level 1, resting, interval.
up, level 2, resting, normal.
up, level 3, resting, fast.

Hi Jens,

The 19 that I have lying here on the table (and which is different from the 99 that I have in my car) is exactly as well-documented as the 99 that you photographed above.

The pinout is the standard VW pinout (which you apparently don't have).

down: interval
swipe up: swipe once.
fast forward: slowly scrub.
Twice to the top: Quickly swipe.

The 99 that I have now can be programmed by tapping it downwards (once) and then setting the desired time.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello Jan,
Thank you for your effort.

I have, however, come to a conclusion. The relays are the same, but the wiring is different. In the A3, the ground connection for the windshield wiper motor is wired differently than in the Golf.

So, I guess I can probably discard all of this...

Hi,

I also think that a renovation wouldn't be worth it. Perhaps one of the Audi drivers knows if there's something similar available.

Best regards,

Jan.

@ Jens

Caution - "not at golf" is very ambiguous. Which golf club? 1, 2, 3, or 4, or even a 5?

The 99-spec [part] fits Golf models 2 and 3 - presumably also model 1.

But since the Mk4 has this protruding knob on the lever, it won't fit on Golfs from the Mk4 onwards.

I've also installed it in a 2000 Polo 6N2.

Tonight, we have an Ibiza 6K GP01 coming up - the same type that Jan has (Jan, I could have told you this before, but I didn't see the thread icon_smile.gif).

"19" models are always interchangeable with "99" models.

... there was another T.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

Not all Golf 4 models have this feature; it's the same as with the A3. This type of interval scheduling would only be introduced at a later date, and I can't tell you exactly when that will be.

Hi,

@MartinViewing profile: Martin: No worries... just take a look at the start date; the thread is quite old, and I've been using that relay without any problems since then.

Best regards,

Jan.
