Is that the letter code you are looking for?
Yep, that's it.

However, the Golf III was manufactured from 1992 to 1997, so knowing the year of manufacture would also be helpful. Please answer all questions.

I just checked the prices for a 1996 [model/year].

The ge/ro wire runs from the sender (pin 4) to the 24-pin connector on the motor (pin 3), then to the main fuse box (G2/3), from the fuse box (U2/9) as a white cable to the instrument cluster (T28/23).

Coolant sensor pin 2 (brown/green) and pin 1 (brown/blue) are shorted to ground.

The coolant sensor signal wire, pin 3, black/brown, connects from the 24-pin connector on the engine (pin 20) to pin 14 of the 68-pin connector at the engine control unit.

Okay, now come and tell me that it was a completely different year of manufacture, and that I should look it up again. *Muttering*.

Hopefully, this helps despite the building's age.
-Private, going to sleep now.

Hi Private,
Thank you very much. You're really putting in a lot of effort. So, the Golf is from either 1996 or 1997. I think you probably looked up the right information. I will definitely check it out based on what you wrote.
But what's still bothering me is, what if the cable is okay? Everything seems to point towards a faulty control unit new_cry.gif. Or could there just be a cold solder joint somewhere? At first, the error was intermittent, and now it's permanent.
I will definitely keep you updated, and I'm going to check everything now.
Thank you for your efforts. I really appreciate that you're all putting in so much work.

Have a good evening.
Bubu.

Then there might be a loose connection in the connector at the control unit, or the pins inside the control unit could have cold solder joints.
That would still be relatively easy to fix.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
I've also thought about such a cold solder joint on the circuit board... I know it all too well, although from other devices icon_wink.gif.
I'm definitely going to get to the bottom of this. I just have to figure it out myself; I don't want to take it to a repair shop...
Okay, here's a dumb question: What does the workshop do if the engine control unit has a cold solder joint? Can you then be forced to buy a new one for, I don't know, however many euros?

Thank you all, and I will keep you updated.

Bubu is now going to look for something edible. icon_wink.gif

What does the workshop do when the engine control unit has a cold solder joint?

The workshop will do everything it can... Unfortunately, all they are able to do is install a new one icon_rolleyes.gif.

However, it would also be quite a lot to expect them to recognize the defect as a cold solder joint and resolder it accordingly. That would make troubleshooting take even longer, and ultimately, the total price would likely end up being the same.

PS: I don't think you have a problem with the MSG itself. I still suspect it's a cable or sensor issue. You would be the first person I know of whose MSG input has failed without any external influence.

Regards,
-Private

So, basically, we open up (almost) every single issue and check to see if we can quickly identify the error.

If that's the case, we'll try resoldering it; otherwise, we'll install a new one.

The sensor is 100% functional and brand new. The old one is also working correctly; I tested it and have a diagram showing its readings at various temperatures. Furthermore, the control unit isn't responding to different resistor values. Also, the cable from the sensor to the round motor connector is in good condition.
This weekend, I hope I'll have time to check the cable routing to the control unit.
Thank you for your help.

Just connect a fixed resistor directly to the engine control unit and to ground. This will quickly, easily, and safely show you whether the control unit is still functioning.

Private.

'Okay, that's a really excellent idea. I'll definitely do it that way. It's easier than having to measure all the wires.'
But first, I need some time, when Dad doesn't need his car icon_smile.gif).
I hope I can do that sometime this weekend.
Thank you.
Bubu.
