Hi Ulf,

Please, when you include this in the price list, remember to add a note that some of these features are standard equipment on certain cars. For example, the A6 already comes standard with features like climate control, central locking, power mirrors, power windows, head airbags, fog lights, and velour floor mats. And I believe that weight is already included in the specified weight.

Regards,
arne

I think 20 kg is too much for a family car and a compact car. Most of the weight comes from the power windows themselves. The electric ones probably weigh only slightly more (since they have a motor instead of a crank, and the few switches and wiring harness don't add much weight).

Yes, the wiring harness is the lightest... Are you sure?
For a comparable car, the complete wiring harness for the doors (including central locking and electric windows for a 2-door car plus the trunk) weighs approximately 7kg! Copper is incredibly heavy.
Each motor weighs approximately 1 kg. The control unit for these functions adds another 1.5 kg. I estimate the door lock motors to weigh a total of 2.5 kg. In total, this amounts to 14 kg for the 3-door model. This doesn't include the components for the switches and the corresponding brackets/cable guides. Even though these are "small" items, they quickly add up to the stated 20 kg. It's definitely not less than the 20 kg extra weight for the power locks and electric windows.

One more note about the velour floor mats:
What VW has recently been installing as "extra-soft quality," probably weighs around 2 kg in our Polo Highline, definitely not 5 kg.

Hello again.

In the "Gute Fahrt" forum, the user "Mampf" posted links to Audi catalogs, including details on the weight of individual equipment options -> I find this very interesting.

So, after reading everything here and summarizing it, I come to only one conclusion:

-> more displacement AND more boost pressure icon_twisted.gif

everything else is a pointless waste of time icon_wink.gif.

Post25-07-2010, 18:34    Subject: DZR Weight Estimates: Accurate & Reliable Quote

*Excavation*

... because I want to re-examine the catalog's empty weight ranges again.

To improve the clarity of the changes, I have taken the positions from the original post and updated them, in some cases using verified data, mainly for the Polo 9N platform.
The values (old or updated) that are relevant for the addition are highlighted in bold.

ulf wrote:
. . . I browsed the Polo catalog (2004) to see which extras can be ordered and how the unladen weight can vary.

The difference of approximately 190 kg between the minimum and maximum empty weight, I once estimated as follows. .

Air conditioner = 50 kg.
(Weighted: Compressor, condenser, and refrigerant lines = approximately 9 kg. Estimated weight including evaporator, refrigerant, and wiring harness: 12 kg)

4 doors = 25 kg

elFH + ZV = 20 kg, Electric mirror adjustment + heating = 5 kg -> Total weight would be 25 kg.
(Weight for the 2-door model: just under 2 kg. Estimated weight including wiring harnesses: 3 kg, for the 4-door model: 5 kg)

Largest radio with navigation system = 20 kg.
(Weighed: CD radio with 4 speakers = 4.5 kg. Estimated weight including antenna and wiring harness = 6 kg)

Head airbags = 15 kg (New estimate, after having handled steering wheel airbags several times: 5 kg).

Fog lights = 5 kg.
(Weight: approximately 1 kg, estimated value including wiring harness = 1 kg)

Larger rims (additional weight compared to standard wheels) = 10 kg.

Sunroof = 10 kg

Easy Entry seats = 10 kg.
(Balanced weight with drawers included: 8 kg)

4 textile doormats = 5 kg

ESP = 5 kg (New estimated value, as the hardware overhead compared to a basic ABS is minimal = 2 kg).

2-coat paint (metallic, etc.) = 10 kg

New: Towing hitch, according to Bertil = 21 kg.

New: Full-size spare wheel instead of puncture repair kit = approximately 14 kg.

Overall = 190 kg (new values: 134 kg).

Now, there are 56 kg missing from the possible dry weight range of a Polo 9N. In other words, only 70% of the range is covered by explanations icon_eek.gif.

"Does anyone have information that can explain the missing 56 kg of potential weight variation?"

Hello Ulf,

Sure, here's the translation:

"Unfortunately, no explanations, but objections:"

The fuzzy floor mats from VW weigh less than a kilogram in total. This wouldn't apply to rubber mats, but it probably doesn't apply to textile mats either.

"Also, even solvent-based paints have been two-coat systems since the introduction of water-based paints. So, in my opinion, there's no difference in weight."
Gruß

Food for thought:

To achieve a roughly average result, averaging the factory specifications might be the best and simplest approach for the average consumer.

The vehicle registration document usually includes a range of values, typically for the unladen weight, and a note stating: 'depending on the equipment, up to xxxx.'

The difference of approximately 190 kg between the minimum and maximum empty weight, I once estimated as follows:

Okay, gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.

1000 kg empty weight.
Possible weight: up to 1190 kg.
= 1000 + 1190 / 2 = 1095 kg, which is the average value.

Estimating would be much more accurate; you can only get the correct weight by weighing it. icon_wink.gif What do you mean? icon_wink.gif

Hi Mulle,

It seems like something got lost in translation.
I'm not concerned with the actual weight (for that, I already do weighings), but rather with the possible factory-related reasons for the empty weight range of (in this case) 190 kg icon_wink.gif.

Hello everyone!

In my A4's vehicle registration document, section 14 states: 1460 kg. In the addition to section 14: Up to 1560 kg, depending on the equipment.
The actual weight, including any optional equipment, is indicated on the vehicle data plate; in this case: 1485 kg.

Bei meinem T5 steht nichts auf dem Fahrzeugdatenträger, weil viell. NFZ with truck approval?

What I'm trying to say is:
Ulf, why don't you look at a few Polo models, compare their features, and also check the actual, official weight listed on the vehicle's data plate.
Alternatively, you could weigh them all, but I don't think the manufacturer's specifications should be incorrect.

Best regards from Munich!

We could do that, and then "isolate" the weights of the individual options based on the respective manufacturer's specifications.
The catch is that the actual weight is not listed on the data carrier for the Polo (and Ibiza 6L) models...

Not much, especially for older models? My car, which is 12 (!!) years old, even has the CO2 emissions listed (162g)!

Very interesting regarding the topic: BMW spare parts catalog.

Almost all parts have a weight listed. This allows you to see, for example, that a headrest for a 1 Series BMW weighs 599 g in fabric and 713 g in leather, that the electric seat is 4 kg heavier than the manual seat, and that an E30 air conditioning compressor weighs 8.2 kg, etc. You just need to find a BMW vehicle comparable to the Polo. icon_wink.gif

icon_arrow.gif An E36 Compact or similar model might be reasonably close in terms of the dimensions of the trim parts.

Hi,
Yesterday in the RNZ (a German publication), for example, it was mentioned that a 100 kg weight reduction results in a fuel consumption improvement of 0.3 L/100 km... A8 vs. Phaeton: 300 kg...

It depends, as so often is the case, on the application. In my experience, a payload of 100 kg has never noticeably increased fuel consumption.
However, if you then add wider tires and a shorter gear ratio, the situation looks different.
