Unfortunately, no one knows if he understands his field. But what could possibly happen to the vehicle's electrical system that couldn't be constructively prevented in the software (SG) if desired? Unless you reroute a distribution box icon_smile.gif.
If it were up to me, the car would have to be completely scrapped. It's clear that the airbag is only meant to be used once. As for the control unit, I think this is bordering on extortion or promoting new car sales.

Well...

Is the control unit safety-critical?
2. The crash sensors (or a part of them) are integrated into the control unit.

I don't rely on them working perfectly if the mill has been stopped with more than 50 grams of material inside.
These are micro-mechanical sensors that you can imagine as two interlocking combs; one is fixed, while the other is deflected by the acceleration forces. Depending on the degree of overlap, the capacitance changes (the entire structure acts like a capacitor).

Hi,

I also see it the same way as Gremlin does.

"In this particular case, it's really not worth trying to save money. I suspect that a reliable method for checking whether the control unit has survived the crash completely undamaged would be just as expensive or even more expensive than replacing the control unit itself. Therefore, it's probably not worthwhile."

Furthermore, it's important to remember that no two crashes are the same. Therefore, numerous specific factors would need to be considered, which would make the entire process more complex and also riskier.

Best regards,

January.

Hi,
I know that you can't just peek inside there. However, other components are equally important for safety: What if the engine control unit malfunctions during an overtaking maneuver on the highway, causing the car to lose power? Or what if the ABS unintentionally completely releases the pressure on one of the front wheels? This could have consequences that even an airbag cannot mitigate. In principle, the airbag is at the very end of the chain of safety measures. Ideally, nothing happens at all. In the event of an accident, a stable body structure is the most important thing; the airbag then provides an additional layer of protection.
False alarms would certainly not be very pleasant.

Resetting the airbag control unit (STG) can have serious consequences that cheap providers don't consider. Therefore, new STGs are always installed because their history is traceable.

By the way, repairs after accidents involving deployed airbags often lead to new problems. Cars that are 5-6 years old and have suffered minor front-end damage can become economically totaled due to the replacement of airbags (often including the entire dashboard in models like the Lupo/Polo) and the control unit. As a result, these "wrecked" vehicles are sent to Poland or Russia, where they are repaired without airbags and end up being driven there as luxury cars.

All things considered, we have to pay for this expensive nonsense with our insurance premiums.

Hi,
In that case, it would be more appropriate for the manufacturers to offer replacement devices.
In cases of minor damage, insurance companies have achieved success (e.g., with bumper repairs), although this doesn't account for the mischief caused by painted bumpers.
Regarding LLMs (Large Language Models), prices have also changed over time.

Hi,
Other components are just as critical for safety: What if the engine control unit unexpectedly cuts power during an overtaking maneuver on a country road, or if the ABS unintentionally completely relieves the load on one of the front wheels? This can have consequences that even an airbag cannot mitigate. In principle, the airbag is at the very end of the chain of safety measures.

No. Other components are not as safety-critical because they are not directly connected to something like a bomb that could explode 30 centimeters away from you. The importance of safety lies not only in the airbags deploying during a crash, but even more importantly, in them *not* deploying without a crash!

hi,
Furthermore, an airbag control unit costs only about €300, which is quite cheap for a control unit from Volkswagen.
greetings

Thank you to everyone who responded. I finally tried using VAG-COM. It worked with my control unit, which has the specified critical part number (6Q0 909 605A). I was able to clear the errors without damaging the control unit (error code 65535).
Year of manufacture: April 2001.

Best regards.
Christian.
