So, I looked at and test-drove several Passats today, and ultimately bought the '99 PD with 115 horsepower. It definitely feels a bit 'rougher' compared to the standard TDI, but it was fun to drive from the start. You actually get some power when you press the accelerator. With the standard TDI, you also get some power, but not as much, and you feel like the car is hesitating before deciding whether or not to accelerate.
The usual pause for reflection in the fast-paced world.
With the PD (presumably referring to a product or device), it seemed much less pronounced. I mean, it reacts almost immediately.
Hopefully, I'll still get some enjoyment out of the car.
Next up, I probably need to get a chip installed.

Okay, I'm also adding something here (1Z vs. 100 HP PD xxx).
1Z: The running noise on the outside is relatively quiet, with no noticeable clacking sounds. PD: It makes a lot of clacking noise, but it's very quiet inside (probably due to the insulation).
Suit: In '1Z' mode, the turbocharger spools up smoothly, and '1Z' pulls (when the emergency program isn't activated) in a very harmonious way through the RPM range of 2,000 - 4,200 revolutions. In 'PD' mode, it comes on very aggressively, and you get the feeling that the turbocharger feels slightly restricted above 3,250 revolutions.
Fuel consumption: I'm impressed with the fuel efficiency of this technology: 5.0 liters per 100km in a Touran on rural roads with some villages is remarkable. My 1Z uses about 5.2 liters per 100km (but the timing belt service interval is approximately every 10,000 km).
Here's what else needs to be mentioned: The PD engine starts exhibiting idle fluctuations (after less than 10,000 km). I find that disappointing because otherwise everything is great (although not everyone appreciates the precise PD sound). However, despite the brilliance of the engine, I would probably opt for the AFN (which isn't as highly tuned), but the problem is the price of the PD injectors: €1,200 (for 4 units) compared to €400 (for the ESD from the 1Z) is quite expensive. It's a different story if you also consider the VEP (variable exhaust pressure), which costs another €900. Well, it's all a matter of perspective.

Lately, I've been looking for a new used car...
specifically for a Volkswagen Passat TDI PD with 115 horsepower.
Initially, I haven't fully understood what the real advantages of PD (presumably referring to a specific technology or system) are supposed to be. The technology itself is clear (I am informed about that). Presumably, the efficiency of the motors will be higher, and fuel consumption will also be lower.
But various friends have given me quite different opinions on the matter.
Firstly, the TDI pump nozzle is supposedly much louder. Compared to a 1.9 TDI Passat engine (110 hp), the 1.9 TDI PD only has 5 more horsepower (referring to the first generation of PD engines produced around 1999/2000 in VW Passats).
On the other hand, it should have a significantly higher torque output, even though we're only talking about a power increase of 5 horsepower.
Then, due to its design, the power drive (PD) will consume more oil.
The older TDI engine is generally said to run more smoothly and quietly than the comparable PD engine.
Okay, here's the translation:
'Now my question is, what's true about such statements? Where do the real differences lie? (Aside from the D3 tax standard).'
What can be expected from chip tuning for both engine variants (1.9 TDI/TDI PD)?

I drive a Passat AJM, model year 2000, so one of the last ones with 85 kW.
If you want a car that is economical to maintain and has proven reliability, I recommend choosing one with 110 horsepower, which refers to the older engine version. It's more fuel-efficient, and you can also consider getting it 'chipped' (reprogrammed).
My car has caused me a lot of stress and frustration.
In my humble opinion, all PD engines are hopelessly inferior to conventional engines in terms of development maturity and lifespan; the 130 horsepower is simply too extreme for the material limits.
As I said, this is just my opinion, but mine currently has about 119,000 kilometers on it.

.....before my ASZ Ibiza, I had a 1998 Ibiza GT TDI (AFN 110HP), and strangely enough, whether with or without a tuning box, it never consumed more than 5.5 liters  , not even during full-throttle runs on the highway (the unladen weight was 1,100 kg). The 6L consumes about 6.5 liters (just broken in, unladen weight of 1,200 kg).
The AFN engine was cold and a bit louder, but as Jan said, it might be due to the good insulation of the 6L Ibiza! The old Ibiza had 143 hp and 295 Nm with a KW Powerbox and Twister kit, which is roughly on par with my current 6L (standard, only 4,000 km driven), but the power delivery was more harmonious than with the ASZ engine.

Subject: Tuning for the PD engine... I'm torn. First, I wanted a power box, then I was sure that OBD tuning or chip tuning would be more sensible... Now, three people have told me about clutch problems after OBD tuning on an Ibiza with an ASZ engine... 400 Nm seems to be too much even for the 6-speed gearbox in the long run!

I personally bought an IVer in June 2002 with this machine. After about 2000 kilometers of break-in, I immediately had a Bosch tuner install a performance chip.
It should boost the engine's performance to just under 160 horsepower and 380-400 Nm of torque.
And I can only tell everyone that this feeling of 'suddenly exploding with power at just under 1700 RPM' is simply breathtaking.
and with the demn, no VP car can keep up. On the highway, in its optimal torque range (which doesn't mean you have to drive slowly  , my Golf needs just under 5 liters!), it naturally consumes more fuel – perhaps even more than a VP car... 'Why don't you try it with a gasoline-powered engine?'
'To achieve a speed of 235 km/h, it would need at least 150 horsepower, and perhaps even more power generated by a turbocharger. However, at those speeds, it would easily consume 20 liters of fuel per hour.'
Considering the performance figures of the Opel Performance Center's engine with its reflector-charged 1.9 diesel and its 212 hp at 400 Nm, I probably have to change brands in 2006  .

According to the speedometer readings, as you measured it, almost every V6 TDI engine with a VP44 pump is performing similarly (and these are engines that have not been modified). Therefore, the statement should perhaps be limited to engines equipped with VP37 pumps.
But let's talk about something else: what is the gear ratio of the transmission in the 130 hp PD engine?

Unfortunately, I can only provide you with anecdotal information and no precise details regarding the gear ratios.
'My car's 6th gear reaches approximately 4250 RPM at 235 km/h, and that's where it stops due to the pump pressure. Before getting a chip tune, this limit was reached at around 4000 RPM.'
but let's go back to the actual speed.
According to my TomTom PPC device, the speed is still 225-230 km/h!

The 115 hp TDi PD engine from 2000 in the Sharan is quite noisy, both when cold and warm. However, the 110 hp TDi engine in the previous generation Sharan was considerably quieter. But the PD engine has exceptional pulling power. You wouldn't think that was possible in a Sharan.

Addition and practical experience:
Based on the many comments and suggestions I've received, I would like to share my experiences so far.
I eventually bought a Passat 1.9 TDI PD manufactured in 1999 after test driving three different vehicles. These included both the older TDI engine and the newer PD engine.
I have to say that the PD really convinced me. The car is from the year 99 and has 115 horsepower. The fun factor is already there.
It's overdue for an inspection. The air filter is probably clogged, and the other filters plus the oil likely aren't in good condition either. However, it still runs pretty well and is relatively quiet inside. My A4 1.8T gasoline engine was actually louder at higher speeds.
The statements regarding loudness, especially the one about the suit and airflow, I can only confirm through direct comparison. The PD is more fun and definitely has a higher entertainment factor. Regarding this, I will still be interviewing my tuner  .
I then called the previous owner listed in the registration documents and inquired about the car I had purchased from the dealer. He told me that I definitely got a good deal and received a solid, well-maintained vehicle.
Was will man mehr.....alle Inspektionen gemacht, Zahnriemen war vor 22.000 neu gemacht worden. Everything is fine...
Now it has 192,000 miles on the odometer and is running really well. So far, I'm very happy with it, and I think my decision was the right one. At least so far...

The PD runs a bit rougher, or rather, more robustly, even when it's warm.
In my opinion, the turbocharger needs to be kept at a high RPM to provide sufficient power; older models had plenty of torque coming from low RPMs.

So, the TDIs that I test drove exhibited this phenomenon. You had to keep them at a certain RPM. The PD engine I have has a fairly consistent power delivery. It has almost no turbo lag. It 'responds' when you press the pedal with very little delay, while a normal TDI first takes a moment to 'think' (at least it seems that way  ).
He achieves good performance even at relatively low RPMs (1900).
However, I have to say that the torque is definitely noticeable.
According to the technical specifications, it already has 50 Nm more torque than the standard 110 hp TDI engine from the factory. It also consumes an average of 0.3 liters more fuel. But that extra power has to come from somewhere.
Well, I'm really enjoying driving this car.

The 74kW PD engine delivers the highest torque of all 1.9 TDI engines from idle speed, and its maximum torque is achieved at the lowest RPM across the entire range. However, it's not as high as that of the more powerful versions.
I used to drive a Golf with the 1Z engine, which has a wastegate turbocharger. This type of turbocharger results in poor responsiveness at low RPMs (at least, it's worse than the VTG turbocharger found in the 90hp version of the Golf). Therefore, the 1Z engine should ideally be kept at higher RPMs.

No problem, the ALE is a 1Z model with modified ESP and ESD components to meet EU3 standards.

With shorter gear ratios, this effect should be less pronounced. Shorter gearing provides even more torque at the wheels.
If the Polo is that short, the higher engine speed might only give you the illusion of more power.
By the way, the G4 with the 74 kW engine has a top speed of "only" 178 km/h (manufacturer's specification), while the Polo is stated to have a top speed of 188 km/h. Gruß Bertil
