I only have a dry air filter, so oil shouldn't be able to reach the mass airflow sensor (MAF). The crankcase ventilation (PCV) system connects to a fixed plastic hose before the turbo, and the MAF is located about 50 cm further upstream in the airbox. Since the air flows from the airbox to the turbo, I can't imagine oil getting that far.
The connecting hose between the mass airflow sensor (MAF) and the turbocharger is also always completely dry in my car.
I can't imagine that the LMM would break because there's too much oil in it.

Hello Doctor,
Okay, if a large amount of oil is being pushed through the crankcase ventilation system into the intake manifold, I can imagine that there might be some oil mist when the engine is then turned off and left to sit.
The oil pressure in the engine is 100% independent of the oil level, unless there is so little oil that the oil pump sucks in air  .

Oil mist can even reach the mass airflow sensor (MAF) while the vehicle is moving. The airflow in such an intake manifold is quite complex, even with a turbocharger. In my case, the hose was coated with oil up to about 3 cm from the MAF sensor after the last oil overfill. It would never have gotten there while the car was stationary (it can't flow uphill).
Regarding the oil quantity: Isn't that the total amount specified in the owner's manual? When refilling, you always have to subtract approximately 0.5 liters due to the oil that remains in the engine. You can't get rid of that, no matter how long you drain it or at what oil temperature. But every VW workshop definitely knows that.

I can't fully understand the issue with the contaminated mass airflow sensor (MAF) right now, because, at least in my car, the crankcase gases are introduced *after* the MAF sensor, not before, into the intake system. Also, there's always more or less oil and blow-by gases in the air.
Regarding gasoline, it can damage the catalytic converter, but I don't know if the same applies to diesel.
'Once, with my 1.6 TDI, the oil level was much too high, causing the crankshaft to whip the oil into a foam. Under full load and maximum RPM, the engine sucked up this foamed oil through the ventilation system and burned it. The engine was running at a very, very high RPM and wouldn't stop. It took me a long time to figure out what was happening.'
From my experience with cars, I remember that there were three different oil capacity measurements listed: without a filter, with a filter, and for a complete refill after the engine has been disassembled. The last amount is, of course, a bit more than for a regular oil change. However, I can't imagine a mechanic being that careless as to confuse them.

and unfortunately, those wonderful, high-quality LMMs can't handle that and eventually degrade...
The old hot-wire mass airflow sensors were simply annealed, and they didn't experience the problem of deposits.

There are at least two pressure relief valves in the oil circuit.
- One valve is located after the oil pump to limit the oil pressure when the engine is cold or at high RPM.
- In the oil filter, to open a bypass in case of clogging.
Neither of them is affected by the engine oil level.

My statement about the oil pressure in relation to the oil level was incorrect, I know. I wrote it too quickly without thinking it through. The oil pressure depends on the oil temperature and the oil pump (there are cases where the impeller blades have broken off). Also, there are cases where the pressure relief valve on the oil pump doesn't function properly and opens too late.
Now, none of this has anything to do with the thread anymore, sorry, that was my mistake!

Hello everyone!
I'm also having problems changing the oil myself (V6 TDI engine, AKN).
I changed the oil and filter. I initially added 5 liters, according to the manual it should be 5.4 liters. I warmed up the engine, then turned it off for 15 minutes, and after that, I checked the oil level, which was at the maximum mark.
Topped up approximately 0.05 liters. Everything seems to be fine. Oil level tomorrow night will be about 1 cm above [the minimum mark/dipstick].
'Funny! I've been trying for several days. The oil filter drains completely, losing about 0.5-0.75 liters of oil in approximately 3-4 hours, and it ends up pooling underneath.'
'It seems the oil is coming out of the wrong place, where the inlet is, and in my opinion, a check valve is visible. It stays there. I've already been to 4 VW and Audi dealerships today to find out if the oil filter needs to drain completely before the oil stops flowing, and if so, whether it should drain quickly, in about 15 minutes, or slowly, over 3-4 hours. I also wanted to know what the correct oil level should be. I didn't get any specific answers.'
In the workshop, they checked the oil level after 15 minutes, and one person said it was empty.
The other one must not be allowed to run empty. Great staff!

So, it turns out this didn't just happen to me.
My 1Z has been maintained by the same team of master mechanics at the same VAG workshop since I bought it.
During the last service at 195,000 km, I suddenly had approximately 0.5 liters too much oil. I repeatedly complained about this. While they acknowledged that it was harmful, they did nothing about it!
Due to other careless mistakes during that inspection (I subsequently failed the TÜV inspection!!! just to mention one more), I am no longer a customer there.

The oil filter must not run dry; if it does, you will damage your engine in the long run.
I can only talk about the oil filter in my A3, which is a vertical design. The filter element is placed inside an aluminum die-cast cylinder, and a plastic cap is screwed on top.
This screw cap has 2 O-rings.
- to seal the lid against the aluminum housing.
- and one on the plastic rod/tube of the lid that extends into the bottom of the aluminum housing.
When changing the oil filter, both O-rings should always be replaced. If the lower O-ring, which is located on the plastic pipe, is damaged, the filter will drain completely.
How long does it take for you to reach oil pressure when starting the engine? The empty filter should take at least 2-3 seconds to fill.

I was lucky today at the 5th Volkswagen dealer!!!
brief description of the problem, but we don't have an answer to it either.
Several customers have reported oil level issues with their V6 TDI engines after oil changes. The workshop always measured the oil level as being within the acceptable range (i.e., not exceeding the maximum level) after approximately 15 minutes. However, customers were finding the oil level to be too high when they checked it at home in the morning. I checked for faulty check valves in the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) housing using diagnostic tools, but found nothing. The dealer then sent a fax to Volkswagen in Wolfsburg to investigate the issue. I received a call four hours later.

Okay, so with the V6 TDI engine, it's technically necessary for the oil filter to drain completely before the oil stops flowing because there's no check valve at the outlet, only at the inlet. In my case, this is within acceptable limits. The oil level, which is measured approximately 15 minutes after the engine is turned off, with the oil still warm, is the critical measurement. It should be at or slightly below the maximum mark. What then drains out of the filter after that is normal.

My oil filter is also a vertical design, but it's different.
I only have a single O-ring on the plastic screw cap, and there is no plastic rod/tube with an O-ring on the cap.
A plastic tube is firmly screwed into the center of the oil filter housing. The oil filter is then placed over this tube and is sealed at the top and bottom by felt gaskets.
At the top of the plastic tube, there's a valve that opens when the filter needs to be...

I can't tell you exactly how long it takes for the oil pressure to build up, as it's the same issue I experienced with my Passat Variant (and it was also the case with my A3 1.8 gasoline engine).
The oil pressure warning light goes out after about 3 seconds when the ignition is turned on. I think this is because it also monitors the oil level.

Okay, do you happen to know why Speed Buster has been using new software since 2002?
The V6 TDI engine with 150 hp has seen a reduction in power output. In 2001, it produced 190 hp and 405 Nm of torque, but in 2002, it was reduced to 186 hp and 360 Nm. Mine has 189 hp / 405 Nm, according to the specifications.
Dyno test completed. However, it already had 162 hp / 360 Nm from the factory.
Are 190 horsepower and 405 Nm of torque too much for sustained use?
