With a Waeco MSI 212 inverter, the vehicle's on-board voltage is converted to 230V AC. An HP notebook power supply is connected to the inverter, and the notebook is connected to the power supply.
The notebook should be connected to the OBD2 port using the VCDS interface.
The vehicle mass is connected to the "protective conductor" of the inverter. The notebook power supply connects the protective conductor to the outer contact of the DC plug (-).
"There is a voltage difference of 180 mV between the vehicle's ground and the ground at the notebook's RS232 port, as well as between the signal ground and the ground at the VCDS OBD2 connector. With a load of over 3.3 ohms, this voltage difference drops to 140 mV."
Is this safe, or should the connection between the vehicle chassis and the protective conductor (ground) be disconnected from the inverter?
