To conclude - I have read about several cases where the synchronizer ring of the third gear in the 5-speed manual transmission of the Audi 80 B4 (front-wheel drive) has broken. This may be a weak point of the transmission, possibly due to the specific design of the synchronizer rings and the relatively large clearance of the synchronizer ring for the 3rd gear, even when using new parts. At the very least, the manual transmissions of the Audi 80 B3, A4 B5, and A4 B6 models are structurally similar.
If you experience sudden and repeated grinding noises when attempting to shift into third gear, it is likely that the synchronizer ring is broken. If the problem is addressed promptly, the gearbox can still be relatively easily repaired. However, the damage will quickly worsen if left unattended.
