In my opinion, the most important things are that the engine is still hot when it's removed, and that the glow plug opening is clean when it's installed.
I didn't apply any special lubricants to the threads. In my BRE (not a V6 TDI), the glow plug is already deeply embedded in the cylinder head, and there's motor oil everywhere. Without some cleaning, it wouldn't have been easy for me to install it without getting oil on everything.
