Hi!

Yes, I've already taken care of everything. Everything will be replaced!
Thank you for the information, and I'm sorry for the late reply!

Hello!

I hope you remember that I mentioned before that the oil pressure might be too high, especially considering how the chain tensioner looks.

I'm mentioning this only because there were similar issues with the VR6 engines in the past. Of course, those involved chains of a completely different scale; they didn't break.
However, in that process, the clamping rails can get worn down, and the resulting shavings could potentially clog the oil pump's intake screen, which would be the worst-case scenario.
Grüße, Steffen!

Hi Steffen,

I still have your comment in mind.
I'm hoping, however, that it's not a problem with the oil pump.
Considering the mileage (380,000 km), wouldn't some degree of wear on the tension rail be considered normal?
I'll replace the air filter screen at the same time, as I damaged the "Schwalbdingens" (presumably a specific part) while removing it.

Hello!

The mileage is extremely high, which means anything could potentially happen with the engine.

In my opinion, the overhead conductor rail looks like something terrible happened there in a short period of time.
Because it looks so corroded, a normal, even wear pattern looks different in my opinion.

But if you keep that in mind, regarding the oil pressure, I think we've done everything possible for you here.
And waiting for a success message icon_biggrin.gif.

Do you have any tips on how to install the crankshaft oil seal without damaging it?
Unfortunately, the board has a dent. Would it be enough to cover it with tape?

Edit: I'll see if I can still get a shaft seal including the installation sleeve!

Hello everyone,

I've now driven the Polo for 1000 kilometers!
The turbocharger seems to have survived, hopefully all the other parts as well!

Thank you all so much for your help – it really made things easier for me!

And now, here are a few more photos for those who are interested:

Hello Steffen,

Regarding this, I have one more question about the oil pressure.
What is the maximum oil pressure allowed for this engine (1.4L TDI, BWB)?

I'm just asking because the timing chain sounds strange again after only about 50,000 km...

Best regards,
Volker.

It can vary depending on the engine, but anything above 6 bar would definitely raise my suspicion, and anything below 2 bar at 2000 RPM as well. When measured near the pump, it's normally significantly lower; around the cylinder head, it's normal to see much less pressure. If there's a separate valve installed there, it opens at 2-3 bar.

Hi,

I've now measured the oil pressure at the oil cooler.
3.0 bar at idle and 4.5 bar at 3000 RPM.

According to VW (ELSA), a pressure of 5.8 bar should not be exceeded.
Should that work, right?

Hello,

The oil pressure looks okay to me. However, be careful: the oil pressure at idle speed is highly dependent on the engine and oil temperature!
Measured in cold or hot conditions?

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,

The engine was rather cold.
Although he had gone for a run in the morning, by the time I was able to take his temperature, it was later in the morning.
But doesn't hot oil actually reduce the pressure?

Best regards,
Volker

I know the question is quite old now, and the engine has probably already been repaired, but here's my experience.

What kind of damage can a motor sustain when it's running with little or no oil? When I let the motor idle, I also looked into the oil filler opening. And it definitely didn't look dry there...

I once, in a fit of utter mental derangement, started a Golf with a 1-liter engine while the oil was completely drained (!), and moved it to a different parking spot.

The car continued to run smoothly for another 5 years and 180,000 kilometers within the family without any issues.

Yes, that's why you can also get a better sense of whether the oil pressure is too low by feeling how hot the engine is... I would be surprised if the repair manual doesn't specify an oil temperature range.

Best regards, Rainer.
