Hello Bertil,
You are mistaken this time; according to the manufacturer's specifications, the Golf IV with a 74 kW TDI engine and manual transmission has a top speed of 188 km/h, both for the sedan and the station wagon.
With my sparsely equipped 3-door car, I reach a little over 200 km/h according to the speedometer, which wonderfully confirms Ulf's theses about the advantages of lower power-to-weight ratio.
Similarly, regarding the manufacturer's specifications for the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h:
Limousine: 1291 kg - 11.3 seconds.
Variant: 1415 kg - 12.7 seconds.

The 74kW PD engine has the highest torque of all 1.9 TDI engines from idle speed, and its maximum torque is achieved at the lowest RPM across the entire range.
This, combined with the optimally tuned EUH transmission, results in a very harmonious power delivery – it feels like stretching out a long rubber band. I've never been able to move a car so quickly while shifting gears so lazily; just put it in fifth gear and you're done.
For the Golf, the AXR engine is, in my opinion, the most optimal choice. At this point, I would like to thank Bertil again for the articles here on the forum, which led me to choose this particular engine.

Hi professionals...
Lately, I've been looking for a new used car...
specifically for a VW Passat TDI PD with 115 horsepower.
What works well in the Golf is definitely too little power for the Passat (74 kW TDI), in my opinion. The top speed according to the speedometer is 185 km/h, and you have to shift into fourth gear when overtaking, otherwise the car doesn't accelerate properly. I would advise against the 74 kW engine for the Passat; with the 96 kW engine and a 6-speed transmission, you are much faster and more economical. Also, the advantage of a D4 insurance class that the 74 kW Golf has is lost in the Passat, which still has an EU3 rating. Just wanted to share this as advice for other potential Passat buyers.
Best regards, Marcus.
