Unfortunately, I cannot enter my current charging defect here. Mileage: 180,000, chip since 150,000. AHF 110 PS

Today on the highway, it was torn apart icon_cry.gif

My dear Uwe!

Did the engine at least remain undamaged?
Do you already know exactly what is broken on the charger? Did the bearing fail or did a turbine blade break, leading to (imbalance) and subsequent failure?

Greetings
Alex

Post28-05-2004, 17:12    Subject: Re: Turbocharger lifespan for TDIs Subject: Turbocharger lifespan for TDIs Hi everyone, I'm writing to get some advice on the lifespan of the turbocharger in my TDI. I've heard that they can last a long time, but I'm also concerned about the potential for failure. I'm planning to drive my TDI for many years to come, and I want to make sure that I'm taking care of it properly. I'm particularly interested in learning more about the factors that can affect the lifespan of the turbocharger, such as: * Driving habits * Maintenance * Environmental conditions I'm also interested in learning more about the different types of turbochargers that are available for TDIs, and which ones are most likely to last the longest. Any advice or information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, [Your Name] Quote

A4-B5 AFB '99, 210.000 km

25% city, 10% country road, 65% highway, average 11.5 L/100km.

Turbocharger lasted longer than 50,000 km.

Hello everyone!

After approximately 5 weeks of survey duration, I will remove the "important" rating, as I believe that most forum members who already had a turbocharger failure have already submitted their vote and comment.
Of course, further voices and comments are also still welcome icon_biggrin.gif

I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to gather some meaningful information here icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

In summary, my conclusion is:
Besides turbochargers with material/manufacturing defects, which, of course, fail within the shortest possible time, modern TDI turbochargers have proven to be quite durable and robust components, provided they are treated properly. This means keeping both speed and load low when the engine is cold, and only allowing the turbocharger to cool down slightly after longer full-throttle runs before shutting off the engine. A significant reduction in the expected lifespan is, of course, also to be expected due to massive increases in boost pressure icon_wink.gif
A properly maintained turbocharger should easily last for 200,000 km.

I've been considering whether I should start a separate thread focusing on the early detection of charger damage (sounds and other symptoms) so that we can react early and avoid a major engine failure. Here, one could gather the concentrated knowledge of the victims to prevent others from suffering even greater harm.

Greetings
Alex

Hi Don,

I like the idea. I can imagine that there might be signs like high oil emissions, but how far in advance? Maybe we can figure it out this way.

It would also be important for people to indicate which oil they are using, as a higher consumption is normal with 0W30.

(I still don't believe that too thin oil is the cause of the damage, rather I believe that too thick oil – like 20W60 and similar products – is the culprit)

but my friend had a BMW E46 2.0 TDI with 100,000 km on it
but BMW was cool, they covered 65% of the bill for the 5-year-old car!

Hello, for my Golf 4 with MKB ASZ and GKB ERF engine, the performance is standard.
Yesterday, my turbocharger also failed.
I was driving on the train, covering approximately 30 km.
Then, let it cool down for about 3 minutes before turning off the engine.
I went back quickly to get something, and lo and behold.
Smoky exhaust, like from a Formula 1 Mercedes. This was accompanied by a metallic screech.
Loading pressure was zero. Performance, of course, was also zero.
Oil is now also coming from the exhaust.
I went to the mechanic and he immediately diagnosed a turbocharger problem.
Since my car has only 53,000 km on it and is 2.5 years old, I will be reimbursed for the turbocharger under warranty. However, I am responsible for the labor costs.

Best regards, Jürgen

Hi,

same car as donalexo:

A3 3/97, MKB AGR; The turbo lasted until 177,000 km and no longer provided any power.
Furthermore, the Wastgate dose was also stale. I also drove a noname-
chip.

Current KM: 233,000
I have a tuning on a 119 hp engine, installed 70,000 km ago.
ratio city 15% / country 10% / 75% AB
average consumption 5.9-6.3 liters

always nicely warmed up (stand heating), timing belt properly replaced,
5W40 motor oil

If the engine starts to fail, I'll probably install a 110hp engine...

Hi..

My Passat, manufactured in 1994 with 1Z engine, has 275,000 km (and is still increasing icon_biggrin.gif), and still has the original turbocharger, with very low oil consumption (1/2 liter / 7,500 km).
And I hope this part lasts a bit longer icon_biggrin.gif

I have driven a Passat 35i with 1Z engine, from 180000 to 420000 km. The engine is still in good condition, it's the first turbocharger and the first complete clutch kit. The oil consumption is approximately 1L per 15000 km.

Now I'm driving a Passat 35i AFN, with 175,000 km, first turbo, and only the usual VTG (Variable Turbin Geometry) issues.

Hello,

AFN (2.0l) engine with GT17 turbocharger, forgot to fill the turbocharger with oil during installation -> it took a long time for the engine to be supplied with oil after the turbocharger was rebuilt -> pre-damage -> the crankshaft broke after 470 km.

Driving profile? 100% racing icon_biggrin.gif Consumption approx. 15l/100km

Greetings
Stefan

Post30-12-2004, 15:42    Subject: Such a turbo can apparently do quite a lot. Quote

AFN 81kw from 1000km, remapped to around 140hp -> apparently not well maintained by the previous owner -> no maintenance records, nothing!!!
When I took possession of it at 120,000 km, it had already been driven for approximately 130,000 km. The VTG (presumably a gearbox or similar component) was completely shot -> constantly running in limp mode at a maximum of 0.6 bar -> conversion to a 'larger' turbo is underway -> further modifications are currently being carried out at full speed.

Result despite a WILDSAU icon_evil.gif as previous owner, maintained Turbo, 130tkm, only VTG defect.

Lots of country roads, little city. Fuel consumption 5L in the Ibiza 6k

Had a cargo failure at 96,000 km.
According to the workshop, everything was covered in soot (charger and intake paths), but the problem could be solved with a cleaning. icon_biggrin.gif (Hopefully, it will last a long time)
I'm going to consider this as faulty because a VW workshop would have installed a new compressor for me.

P.S. The 'Russ' was owned by the previous owner!!!!
