Hello,
Today I took my Golf3 1Z for a used car inspection because my girlfriend wants to take over the car. We also had an emissions test done at the same time.
The following phenomenon occurred:
The minimum required speed was not reached, and the maximum speed achieved was 4500 RPM. A K-value of approximately 0.7 was observed, which the inspector considered to be very good.
Why is the RPM limited to 4500 RPM, or why doesn't it rev higher?
Should I be worried about the engine now?
Thank you.

Therefore, it's a good idea to bring a laptop to the TÜV (technical inspection center), so that if necessary, you can "listen in" during the second measurement.
However, the k-value is meaningless because the initial test should be performed "very slowly" to reach the rated speed. The actual measurements must be taken within 1 or 1.5 seconds from idle to rated speed.
Either you have a strict examiner who immediately demands full throttle, or one who is clueless and doesn't realize that values obtained with gentle acceleration are always lower than those required by the regulations.
Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

He probably did the measurement three times. The first one was really "slow." Then he pushed down quite hard, and my girlfriend got really scared. Anyway, there was a pretty big black mark on the floor of the indoor pool area. I unfortunately didn't have my laptop with me. But I'll check the RPM myself again later. But it might be about right, I think.

Hi,
Please include the numbers 3, 8, and 11 in your personal log entry.
Then it would be nice to see how and why it shuts down.
Greetings.

A k-value of 0.7 is normal. The idle speed will adjust itself before you need to make any adjustments to the car. Find a testing facility that can correct the test speed accordingly (they are allowed to do so!).

Hi,
Here's a quick note: During my last inspection, the inspector attached a body sound sensor (is that what it's called?) to the engine. It was funny because depending on where he attached the sensor (the device has a magnet), different RPM readings were displayed .
Well, eventually things worked out.
Best regards, Rainer.

'@Rainer: Yes, this problem sometimes occurs, seemingly randomly, especially with BMW six-cylinder engines, which can sometimes provide completely erratic RPM readings; that's where the inspector comes in!'

Okay, I finally managed to log in.
Okay, the rev limiter seems to be working correctly. Although, I wouldn't call it "rev limiting"; it just stops accelerating. It's not like my gasoline cars, which then aggressively hit the rev limiter.
According to the VAG-Com diagnostic tool, the maximum engine speed in third gear is 4700 RPM.
I have attached two log files from the desired measurement blocks.
According to the k-Power tool, the Golf has a power output of either 64 kW and 225 Nm, or 66 kW and 235 Nm. These are values from two measurements taken on the same track, in both directions. In the log with the higher power output, I wasn't able to let the car coast for as long.
Well, that doesn't really have anything to do with the problem.

You can achieve an approximately realistic idle speed, similar to what you'd get during an emissions test (AU), only when driving in third gear on a downhill slope, where the car would naturally roll down at around 100 km/h!

Was your engine perhaps running in a limp-home mode? For me, with the system not in limp-home mode, the oil turbidity was 0.55 at an adjusted speed of 5,150 RPM, and in limp-home mode it was 1.97 m and 4,750 RPM.
Regards,
Manuel.
