Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts,
Unfortunately, my CYP gearbox in my 1998 Golf 3 Variant is failing (difficult shifting, pitch-black gearbox oil + burnt smell), so I need a new one. Which gearboxes are compatible with the AFN engine in the Golf 3? Do I absolutely have to install an original CYP gearbox, or are other gearboxes also compatible?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Greetings and Happy New Year!

So, the following components were used with the engine that year:
CYP = Switch 02AP.
DAB = Automatic.
DMB = Automatic.
DSG = Switch 02JK.
The clutch discs differ between the CYP and DSG models.
One is 228mm long, the other is 219mm long.
I think it will be easier to install a genuine part again.

Unfortunately, I can't say exactly why the gearbox is broken. I bought the car used, and the shifting was already a bit rough. I initially thought it might be due to a worn-out clutch. However, even after installing a new clutch, the shifting is still rough, so I suspect the gearbox is worn out. As mentioned in the thread, the gearbox oil was pitch black and smelled extremely burnt. We'll see how long it lasts. My engine hasn't been modified.

As far as I know, a dark color in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing.
"My gearbox oil needed to be changed after just over 60,000 km, but the smell was "normal," so there was nothing unusual like a burnt odor."

Here's a possible translation:
"What else could be the reason why my gears are shifting so roughly? It's extremely difficult to shift from first to second gear when it's cold. Once everything is warmed up, it shifts better. I've checked all the screws on the cable linkages, and they all seem to be tight."
Greetings.

Probably confirmed...
but bold?
Just give the connectors a quick spray with Brunox or WD-40, or something similar, as a test.
and then see if it still stutters.
If there's still some good quality grease left as a reserve, that's a good thing.
I once experienced a misfire (in the same engine, same car) caused by being too thorough when cleaning the engine!
Ahem '98? Did they really take that long to build it?

I've had the long car for a while, but not the limousine.

Hello,
Basically, all parts with a VW part number that starts with "02A" will fit, but the quality of most of them won't be great.
"My CYP gearbox, which I installed in a Golf Mk2, also had terrible shifting problems at first. After an oil change with Castrol TAF-X, it gradually got better over time. We have two more of these 02A gearboxes in our fleet, both originally installed in Passat 35i models with AAZ engines. In one, the gears shift well, but 1st and reverse often crunch. In the other, it's difficult to get into 2nd gear when cold, and even harder when warm. We'll see how it improves after the oil change. These gearboxes are known to be prone to problems, and even the parts supplier at the local VW parts store confirmed this."
Black transmission oil can also occur if the previous owner added Molykote. And everyone who has ever changed used transmission oil knows that it smells terribly (smoky to like cat urine). So I wouldn't put too much weight on that alone. Drive a while with the fresh oil; an improvement may not necessarily be noticeable (although I can't really explain that logically ).

"CTN" also fits, it's just a bit shorter when translated.

Hi,
You 'can' also drive an ASD from a 90 hp TDI.

ASD and CTN are not clearly distinguishable.
I've calculated this before, and it can be as high as 14%.

Hello,
The ASD transmission is actually quite appealing to me, as it has a slightly longer gear ratio than the CYP. But what I'm wondering is, would the transmission be able to handle it in the long run, since it was designed for 90 horsepower and not 110. The engine should definitely be able to handle it; it has enough power. But why are shorter gear ratios used in the Variant models compared to the sedans with the same engine? Is it because of the slightly higher weight? Or is it because when the family is in the car, you don't want to drive as aggressively .

The Variants are actually more like trucks among passenger cars.
You'll often need to carry heavy loads, which is why the extremely short first gear is important to get you moving in the first place.
Finally, the cargo space also needs to be used, and a lot of bags of cement can fit in there .
