Hello everyone,
We have an A3 2.0 TDI with a DSG transmission, manufactured on May 14, 2004.
Okay, here's the problem. What's the status of the software? I've read a lot in the forum about the idling roughness.
Now I'm not sure if I'm affected by this issue. Sometimes the car jerks, and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe someone here can help me and also explain how to read the software version (i.e., the number).
Here's what the log is showing for me:
03G906016 DT => Engine Control Unit? Or what?!
5878 => Softwarestand? Or what?!
A friend has the same engine control unit (ECU) part number, but a different software version number: 6179?
Who can help me with this?
Certainly, I'd be happy to help. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
Regards,
Jürgen.

Hello Jürgen,
Yes, the data looks like you suspected. Unfortunately, I also don't have any ideas about the actual problem; it feels like one of the cylinders isn't injecting fuel intermittently.
Best regards, Rainer.

However, the information is somewhat outdated. The most current data for your engine control unit (ECU) is version 7000.

Where can you actually obtain new data sets? Can they be installed using VAG-COM, or do you need different equipment for that?

Hi.

VAG-COM can do a lot, but it's not a tool for flashing the engine control unit (ECU). Either you get lucky and a tuner already has your original software version and can flash it into your ECU, or you go to a VAG dealership.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,
@VAGTUNING: What are the differences between the individual datasets? Are these differences listed anywhere? And why are things constantly being changed?
Regards,
Jürgen.

... why are there constantly new versions of Windows and Word?
Customers are noticing something. The manufacturer themselves only start to realize something after a long time (with production cars from the factory that accumulate kilometers on the odometer as quickly as possible).
And then it will be improved...

Yes, but I would like to know what changes are being made and whether it makes sense to install the updates. It's not always a good idea to install updates for Word and Windows either.
Is there a comprehensive overview of this available anywhere?

To put it simply, yes, the update is worth it and may also fix the idle shaking.

The car with the VIN 03G906016GN 7420 also exhibits the idle problem, even though the car is relatively new.
I wouldn't completely rule out the mechanics...
Best regards, Rainer.

Rainer - the data you're referring to is likely from an A4 BLB, if I'm not mistaken. The A3 version would have a BKD engine paired with a DSG transmission.
Question: Has it ever happened to you that the car stalled when shifting from Reverse (R) to Drive (D)? (If it's a DSG transmission?)

@vagtuning:
Not yet. I've only recently started having problems with the engine not starting easily in the mornings when it's cold. It doesn't matter if it's below freezing or not. It starts, sputters a bit, and then dies. Then you have to crank it for 3-5 seconds, and then it runs. Or sometimes it will start, I'll put it in drive and try to move, and then it dies.
That's how it is.
Where can I find information about what changes were made in each version? It should be accessible to the average user like me.
"Thank you."

Hi,
No, it wasn't a DSG (direct-shift gearbox), but a manual transmission. My comment only referred to the idling problem, which VAG (Volkswagen Group) really needs to fix. The car was practically new, and since May 2004, one would expect it to be running smoothly by now.
Best regards, Rainer.

hello everyone,
Check the sealing rings of the PDE (common rail pressure enhancement) injectors and inspect the tandem pump. I once wrote an article about how to check these components, but I can't seem to find it anymore.
Best regards.

Thank you.
Then, have the dealer install the new version for you.
Then at least the 'hanging' problem should be gone - in older versions (like yours), the AGR rate is incorrectly adjusted, which has been corrected in the newer versions.
Chrisi.

@vagtuning:
What does the EGR rate have to do with the exhaust temperature? When the engine is cold, cooled EGR is not recirculated. And shortly after starting, I don't have any uncooled EGR available yet, because the air needs a moment to heat up.
Can you perhaps explain that in more detail?
And once again, the question: where can I find an overview showing what changes were made in each software version?
Best regards,
