Hello everyone!
Does anyone by chance know if it's possible to completely disable the WFS (engine control unit) on a Passat with a 1Z engine, manufactured in 1995? I occasionally see the message "Engine control unit locked" and the car sometimes only starts after the third attempt.
and then it works again for about a month.
I have already tried a new ignition coil, the electrical part of the ignition switch, and all three starter keys!
Last time, I just disconnected and then reconnected the cable to the reading head, and after that, it worked again! But for how long?
Okay, have a nice day then...

It's supposedly possible, but not as a typical workshop task, rather as a specialty for true enthusiasts who can write an entire software program for an EDC [Every Day Carry item] during breakfast...

If I were in your position, I would continue with this approach: verschandeln the corroded contacts and protect them with a little oil, eliminate any loose connections or cold solder joints, and if necessary, replace the entire WFS control unit.
This will be significantly easier to accomplish for the average hobbyist than decommissioning the WFS. Gruß Ulf

A complete deactivation is likely only possible through a 'mechanical' intervention in the control unit.
It costs around €300.00.

Bosch, for example, can do this through diagnostics.
You won't find anyone who will officially...

Perhaps we should handle this the same way.

Thank you guys!
I will continue to follow the struggles of my car and hope that it doesn't completely break down.
Best regards,

"Maybe this will help you; I had the same problem with my Golf 1Z. It would only start sometimes, or it would turn off while driving. The cause was a faulty immobilizer control unit. Since they installed a new one, it's running fine again."

Hi, there's a very small locking tab on the connector of the reading coil. Please check if it's still attached and, if so, whether it's undamaged. If the problem is related to this, you can order and replace this connector separately.
Best regards,
Michael.

You seem to be real experts in WFS. With my current problem (see /viewtopic.php?t=19275), it could also be related to the WFS.
What does the WFS actually do in a 1994 BMW E36?
Since I've expanded the ELAB system, I would like to know if the WFS does anything more than just turning off the ELAB (parking brake).
Will the MSW possibly adjust the fuel injection amount?
Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English. I will then give you only the translation, without any explanations.
"Thank you."
Erwin.

Hello,
Are you sure your car has a WFS?
Part number MSTG?
Regarding the function: The MSTG is set to quantity '0' (so trying to circumvent ELAB will be futile ).

Hi Micha,
No, I'm not sure if I have a WFS.
The part number is 028 906 021 Q. Can you tell me if I have a WFS (Water Flow Sensor)?
If I have one, it's not accessible via VAG-COM. However, I can't say whether it was accessible before. This is the first time I've tried this.
best regards,
Erwin.

In over 90% of cases, this component does not have a WFS (Water Flow Sensor).
The WFS (presumably an abbreviation) is relatively easy to identify by looking at the "Zünschloss" (likely a specific part or feature).
If present, there should be a "plastic ring" (which is the reading spool) in the front area.
coming out of which is a cable on the side.
Your error description actually contradicts the possibility of a WFS issue, because with a WFS...
The engine starts, runs for a second, and then shuts off again.
The error log in the MSTG (presumably a vehicle's control unit) contains an entry indicating something like "blocked by immobilizer."
I would generally suspect a fault in the electrical system (e.g., an interruption, short circuit, or loose connection).

Does a short circuit or intermittent fault not trigger an error code in the diagnostic system?
I'm actually about to remove the ESP system, but I don't want to do it unnecessarily.
best regards,
Erwin.

Kann - ja; muss - nein. Unfortunately.

Have you observed the starting attempts while the diagnostic system is running (e.g., noting the number of attempts, timing, and engine speed)?
