Diagnostic options for Smart CDI?

What options are there for reading the error memory of a Smart ForTwo CDI, manufactured in 2001, yourself? Is there any software comparable to VAG-COM available, and also a suitable adapter that can be purchased? I haven't been able to find anything on eBay or anywhere else online.

For current Smart ForTwo CDI models (from 2003 onwards), VAG-COM can also be used.
However, things are likely to be worse with the 2001 model, as the engine control unit probably doesn't yet support the OBD2 protocol. This means that all other tools based on the OBD2 protocol will also not work.
