Hi everyone,

I have a question. I want to replace the wheel bearing housing on my girlfriend's Polo tomorrow (1.4 TDI, 75 hp, manufactured in December 2003, key number 2: 656).
"Can anyone tell me what size socket I need to replace the driveshaft nut? They always seem to come up with something new... It looks like a 36mm multi-spline socket, maybe? Any tips would be greatly appreciated."

Greetings,
Dirk.

Okay, the axle nut is a 36-spline type. I just bought a new nut, and the trainee at ATU tried out different sockets. And the best part is, they didn't even have one that fit. They only had spline sockets up to size 32, and hex sockets up to size 48. But the size 36 hex socket was close in terms of size, except for the missing splines.
Maybe this will help someone else. I'll pick one up from my tool supplier later; it should cost around €12.

Best regards,
Dirk.

HI.

I believe the engine should be an AMF or a B&S (Briggs & Stratton).

Can you please take a photo of this mysterious screw? icon_smile.gif Then we will all have learned something here.

Thank you.

Sure, no problem.

Here is the picture.

The largest diameter is 41mm and the smallest is 37mm. (These are approximate values; I will provide the exact measurements later when I have the nut.)

Has anyone ever seen a mother like that?

Greetings.

Yes, it seems to be a standard 12-point [something].

You can also find this on the crankshaft, on the belt side, specifically the well-known crankshaft bolt that sometimes breaks off in older TDI engines.
